Saturday in the Dealers' Room at SEAM in Atlanta, I heard the ultimate in uninformed statements about magic. After nearly half a century in magic I had never heard this one. It was proof that you don't have to read to do magic. (DVDs help with that handicap.)
From a young adult, "I only do the new and modern stuff. I only do street magic." I couldn't believe he was serious but Lucy assured me that he was. (Didn't street magic pre-date streets?) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

LOL That stuff you read about in books and scrolls must have been fake. Those tricks hadn't been invented yet because there were no DVDs. Ask Bill Palmer if ESPN invented cups and balls. If I didn't know that there really are people like that, I would swear you were joking. All they need to see is one trick they can't figure out, and they will melt into a puddle of jelly.
If I ever heard some Dumas s say that, I would ask him what he meant by "street magic." "Do you make streets disappear? Do you make them appear? Do you do "The Streets Through the Table?" Or do you do "The Table Through the Streets?" So, what's the latest "modern" thing you have learned? The card through the window? That's new. Bob Hummer invented it in the 1930's. He did it with a borrowed deck of cards. You show me one "new" piece of magic, and I'll show you a book that is older than your parents with that trick in it.

Bill,
Has this stuff been new to us too long? Someday, I'm sure I will meet a magician who claims he invented water. LOL Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I'm 20, and I got into magic, at the start of 2007, the same way most young people do now, and that's from seeing it on TV. But last year I found the Café, and you all have saved me from the edgy-packaged $30 dvd youtube crap. Within four months, I started table hopping at an Applebees. FYI, I didn't use any tricks I found on 1-trick DVDs Instead, I used card routines which I made up myself, and a few effects from Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment. I sincerely appreciate the help I've received on this forum, because I couldn't have done it without the wealth of information and resources everyone provides here.
With that being said, I wouldn't worry about the kids who do "street magic", it's obviously just a fad. Just like yoyos and scooters were when I was a kid. Hopefully some will find the Café and be properly informed Bryan |

I'm not understanding the discussion here
I'm young (17) and just started magic this past January - took a stage class, but for close-up stuff, I've tended to use DVDs (with the exception of Card College [managed to get through book one]) What I've found is that the DVDs teach more rapidly, and thus give us younger guys the confidence to try out new stuff - is that wrong? I mean - I will eventually finish Card College and go on to other books, but it's just that DVDs seems as a nice way to jump start the hobby |

Mike,
Thanks man, that means a lot! DaChangsta, I don't think anyone is targeted ALL young people involved in magic. Just the ones who get caught up in the hype and the marketing of some of these companies out here. We're speaking about the ones who do it who aren't sincere about it. The ones who would never open a book about magic. DVDs are a great resource for learning, I wasn't knocking all of them of course. I'm just not a fan of the one-trick-ponies out there. Bryan |

O - I see - you mean those people who learn one trick from a DVD and claim to be a magician?

I think DVD's and VHS tapes or a great way to learn from, but one has to include reading as much as you can get your hands on, there so much in print it would take many, many, years to just get on DVDs, how long would it take to just put each effect from Tarbell’s or each of Rice’s Ency. on a DVD;(not in PFD. files but mpg.) Well it still wouldn't be modern or new, and DVD's would probable be out date by the time they were complete. Owln_1

Oh so 98% of everything published by Ellusionist, Theory-11 and the like? Haha. I will certainly second that sentiment. Personally I find it financially devastating. On the other hand, I puchased Rudy Hunter's 'Royal Road to Card Magic' DVD from Magic Makers, and it's certainly helpful when reading the Book. As for modern 'Street Magic', I can't lie. I enjoy street magic. But I would call myself a magician. Afterall, I've been learning for years, and love all the history and legends of our art. Ask most Street Magicians who Dai Vernon is, and they'll retort with "Was he with Theory 11?". True story. I tried that.
