I think it depends on a couple of things like where you're working and the persona that you're trying to project.
If I'm working a restaurant that's a nice place (a step or two above Olive Garden), I dress different than if I'm working a Goth party. Regardless of where I'm working I always try to be one of the best, if not THE BEST dressed person in the room without being cheesy. Its a fine line. Wearing a tux in most places is cheesy. Steve

Bump.
I have been re-evaluating my character and thus re-evaluating my wardrobe follows closely behind. I had been doing a pretty classic blazer and trousers look for some time, and would like something a little more "performer-esque." I'm somewhat in to fashion and recently have been really inspired by Ann Demeulemeester, a Belgian designer. Her collections tend to have a dark romanticism that I think works really well for the image I want to portray. ^I am considering dropping a chunk of change on this jacket. One added bonus of Ann jackets is that they almost always have functional cuffs, a great benefit for rolling up your sleeves. I would encourage anyone else to post similar wardrobe evolutions or philosophies. Their has been an emphasis on better acting technique in magic recently, and I think costume-ing is an important component. PS: Mark Byrne: I know we have disagreed pretty strongly before, but maybe we can find common ground in Magritte. I've been a big fan ever since seeing a few pieces at MoMA as a young teenager. The Taschen coffee table book is a surprisingly comprehensive, academic resource - one of the best presents I've ever gotten .

That is the ugliest jacket I've ever seen! The look is so...ummm....what's the word...?? "SLOPPY!" "HOMELESS!" Maybe I just don't know fashion (I like to think I do) but this look appears to be a guy who just got fired from his office job and is down on his luck and depressed! Maybe that's just me. I think it's a riot...I about spit Coke all over myself when I saw the picture which is weird since I'm drinking Sprite right now...figure that out?

I would kinda like to see that trick. Natanel I know you are a fashion guy but really? I can maybe see it if you are doing a big stage thing and this was a costume of some sort. For my part I wear black slacks, a colorful shirt under a black vest with a silver monogram M, like on my avatar minus the sequins (what was I thinking), and a tie. For props I use a messenger type bag that I made myself. |

As far as taking verbal jabs at each other .... well I grew up in Jersey, call it a character flaw! funny you should bring up an old thread such as this .... I have been working out some new promo material and I have been contemplating a term "Surreal Balloon Artist" and playing with balloons and images of Magritte's work. BTW enjoy the puffy shirt!! I am trying to think from a more theatrical/stage perspective.
I think one of the unique benefits of being a magician is that we can dress more adventurously then if we worked at an office. I do of course have classic clothing I can wear if a gig merits a more professional look, but I want to try something a little different for more relaxed gigs or restaurant work. I happen to think the runway photo looks very good, but I would not style it so aggressively myself. I would wear the jacket fastened at the middle and wear it with a simple MTM white button up and slim charcoal trousers. The jacket is actually made of a really high-quality jacquard material; that and it's simple pallet help balance out the dramatic cut. Spacecop: I'm a recent convert to working out of a bag. I think it's really cool that you made your own. Do you have any pictures? I always want to do DIY things like that but I never buckle down and get the proper materials.

Looks like he just got thrown out of a moving car.
The jacket might not be so bad by itself. I'd have to see it in a real situation and not in some bizarre "i'm posing in a magazine to get your attention so I'll wear it like nobody in their right mind would wear it" look. Does the jacket really have laces? There's great fashion, and then there's fashion for fashion's sake. This getup appears to be the latter. Quote:
I have been re-evaluating my character At first I thought.... FINALLY!! But after seeing the dude in the jacket I'm re-evaluating that thought. Natanel, we need to talk.

A picture of the jacket being worn in real life, similarly styled to how I'd wear it. The ribbons in the runway shot are actually part of the shirt, which is another piece I like a lot. However, while I have a relatively tall, slim build, I don't have the supermodel body necessary for an oversized ribbon shirt haha.

Anybody ever handed out an evaluation sheet to find out what the guests or hosts thought of your outfit? That's a bit over the top; nobody expects to fill out such a thing when out for the night. So, feedback from the setting is needed from someone. Yet asking those present for feedback on dress could be taken by them as a sign of the performer's lack of belief in himself and his dress. I guess we go by gut feeling and casual conversations with folk. If clothing doesn't work for the magic - the image and the equipment- we need to change the clothing or change the routines.
The presentation makes the magic.

Edit: I botched the link before.
The jacket worn in real life, though I would once again, fasten the middle button.

Nat I know you love your fashion but that is ugly.
Now it wouldn't be ugly if you were performing at a fashion show, those skinny freaks would love it. But, anywhere else you will be looked at in a way you probably don't want to be looked at. Save your cash and buy something a bit more audience friendly.

Aw heck...
I have done strolling work in a kilt, vest, sleeveless T and combat boots. I have the personality to pull it off well (Although I will admit, it is more suitable for stage) If Natanel can get away with the rather unusual jacket- Great! Kinda emo-"Twilight" looking for my taste, but at least it doesn't look like traditional cheezy magician wear. Think of it as branding. Patron to waitstaff- "Is the magician here? I don't know what he looks like..." Response- "Oh he's the one dressed...urm...well he's got this...You will know him when you see him." Give it a shot. Gwyd |

All I am going to say is that an audience may or may not know as much about fashion as you do. Obviously I do not as I think it looks like a pottato sack the way it fits. But again I know little to nothing about fashion.
I think you can dress too "above" an audience and alienate them. Make yourself seem unapproachable and standoffish. If they are not comfortable, or are thinking, what the heck is he wearing, it does not make for an easy approach. First rule is to make them feel at ease. I am not sure dressing like this does that. It may, I am not sure. I am not saying don't wear it or that it is wrong. I am saying that you only get one chance to make a first impression. In restaurant work, that impression matters. Maybe for you it will work. If you can pull it off then cool. Truth be told I like it a whole lot better than the standard "card vests" offered by most guys. I think it is a great diversion from the "standard uniform" most magicians seem to need to wear for whatever reason.

Yes I have promo from lots of those guys LOL. Natanel is way ahead of them.
He is trying to be "himself". He likes fashion. Cool. You have to be yourself within certain parameters though. Hey if the guy can pull it off then great. Some guys pull off those dreadful ties.

Thanks.
I do feel a lot of it is confidence. If you seem confident and comfortable I think the audience will be as well. Obviously Gwyd performs in some similarly bold outfits and it seems to work for the sideshow persona he has. I also liked the point he raised about branding. I know I will never be the slick corporate guy in a suit with a headset so I will try to set myself apart from those guys. Hah for the record: I hate emo and the like. Ann D says she is actually inspired by oldschool under-the-radar singers like Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave (these guys just exude cool performer), I think she is also good friends with Patti Smith.
