I have to honestly say that this offends me.

In specific, it is the mystic claim that offends me. It crosses a dangerous line from performance to con artistry when you start claiming your magic tricks are not illusions but real demonstrations of supernatural phenomena.

Great magicians from Houdini to the Amazing Randi have spent a good portion of their professional lives drawing that line and debunking so called mystics.

It is why Derren Brown is a great performer, and Jon Edwards is a charlatan.

I'm sorry but that's terribly naive and shows a lack of understanding of the societal history of modern magic as a performance art.

Take a look at the response posts on you tube. Almost all of them are true-believers in psychic phenomena hailing this demonstration as proof of their beliefs.

There is a VERY important convention in magic that we clearly claim to be magicians and not mediums. It important is specifically BECAUSE people are so easily taken and historically HAVE been taken by people claiming such abilities. We become part of the problem and part of the con unless we make it clear that what we do is *not* supernatural in origin and should not be taken as evidence of anything supernatural.

Ethical mentalists in particular always make this clear. Look at the disclaimer at the front of every episode of Derren Brown's TV Show Mind Control as a good example. Many luminaries in the field have gone further and spent significant amounts of their working lives *exposing* the unethical workers who con people.

At best, we entertain and maybe even help people realize that, whatever they think they are seeing, there is a rational explanation for everything in the world. At worst however, we can lead people to believe in superstitions and expose them to some of the worst forms of manipulation and abuse.

If you don't believe me, watch a few episodes of "John Edwards" and then ask yourself what the beliefs he encourages in his subjects could do to the rest of their lives...

Mystic claims should not offend anyone. I personally do not believe in god or any kind of higher power but I in no way get offended when someone else does. Now with that being said , I agree there is no such thing as spirit energy or anything supernatural but unless someone is directly attacking you with the idea or trying to steal money from you then there is absolutely no reason to be offended. He never mentioned your name once. It was a theatrical performance piece , not an attempt to change you views on what makes the world work. I do not mean to b##ch and moan here , I am just so tired of all this fighting over claims and disclaimers etc. Not one of us here that do effects like this are out saying this is what you must believe in or sitting down pretending to talk to your dead loved ones for a fee. We are just entertaining and that's it. Nothing less and nothing more. If you do not like the art of deception then you should pick a different hobby because Alexandre deception is no less deceptive than the tricks you show people. Unless you do a trick and then tell everyone exactly how you do it you are doing the same thing except you probably are much less of a showman. Don't get "offended" it is not a personal attack. It is a lack of patience and understanding for all who think this way and hide behind personal believes to sound like a better person than they probably are.
Alexandre keep up the creepy work....And lets call Randi and have him prove to us these things don't exist. So far there is no proof in either direction so no one is right . The magician or the worlds precious Randi. Proving the existence of ghost and spirits is as hard as proving god exist. I know this is not a religious chat room but I am just trying to make a point here , you can't say spirits do not exist if you lay down at night and pray to the "holy spirit". So just stop knocking performers who put all their time thought and effort into doing something artistic and entertaining regardless of the presentation.
THOUGHTfully,

LONDON

If you were to do that for me live (preferably at MY home) I would be impressed.
I would not think for one minute you spoke to spirits or had supernatural ability but I would be impressed. It's entertainment and most people would see it as such.

If your disclaimer is truly accurate well done Alexandre...

I will come out of my self imposed exile to defend Alexandre. He deserves it.

How DARE you expose him! How childish. I don't care if you are right or if you are wrong, or whatever HOW DARE YOU! On a public forum as well.

I am not offended by mystic claims I am offended by your breach of etiquette! Alexandre is an entertainer and within that context he is presenting some cool stuff. HOW DARE you try to act like a spoiled child who was fooled badly!

I know Alex to be of the HIGHEST moral fiber and chaercter. To denounce him as some sort of charlitan is beyond belief. He claims to be an entertainer and nothing more.

I do not like those who claim spirit knowlege to take money in a fradulant manner. Alexandre does NOT FALL INTO THIS CATAGORY!

Thanks, Danny, you get it ... and so do most of you.

This behavior of attempting to expose a fellow performer is completely uncalled for. In a country like ours (USA) or in the UK and many other places around the world, people have access to the internet to do a little research if they so choose about almost any subject, including ghosts and the paranormal, citizens can visit a library or a bookstore to read up on the subject, or they can approach a professor to ask probing question about this. I'm an entertainer, and what I do is entertain. Why you feel you need to "save people" by attempting (you failed) to expose what I have done in an open forum is beyond me, quite childish and pathetic.

Hi Alexandre,
I do agree that he should have not exposed (or tried to expose) you. But I think the reason he did try was because he thought that you actually claim to have paranormal abilities. Do you claim to have paranormal abilities or is that all just for the performance of the effect? For example: If I am doing the hover card effect for an audience, I would say "Watch me make this card float using the powers of my mind". But if I go beyond that and start believing and telling people (when not performing) that I actually do have these ablilities, that's a whole different story...and I think that's what Cyberqat was reffering to. If you don't claim to have paranormal abilities then Cyberqat should appoligize to you. But, if you do claim to have such abilities then I'm on Cyberqat's side.

I liked the video. No problems with the claims (or lack thereof). The only issue I have is that he did not explain what the test conditions were that he performed under. I think it could be stronger with that bit of information supplied (my apologies if I missed it somewhere).

Gimme a break Alex, loud rock music and a picture moves. I'm back in college... I used to blow the pictures off the wall of the neighbors all the time. Smile Smile

Nice editing on the serious side. By that I mean the music added.

Cheers.

Tom, thanks, I hear ya. And though I understood what you meant by editing, I'll just mention again that there was no trick photography or video editing whatsoever.

Having said that, I'm surprised Cyberqat's attempt to expose a performer on this board is still up. Is it ok to watch a video on the Magic Café and mouth off on possible methods? I'd appreciate support on this issue. After all, I'm a performer, and entertainer, and my methods for whatever it is I choose to do should not be discussed by others on an open forum.

Art, there's no excuse whatsoever for Cyberqat to have tried to expose what I perfomed on that video. None! I'm a performer and his attempt to expose the demonstration is unacceptable.

The funny thing is no one would be complaining if I had mentioned in my presentation that this was an ability I gained after being picked up by a UFO and taken to Uranus (far fetched? not for some) but because I mention something "paranormal" the self-proclaimed saviors of the ignorant come out of the woodwork.

Silly, plain silly.

A simple yes or no won't do for me, I'm not here to baby anyone. I'm an entertainer, what I say in my performances is what I say in my performances regardless of my personal beliefs. You don't know me and you have no clue what my beliefs are. Again, I'm a performer, an entertainer. Look at my website, look at my YouTube videos and come to your own conclusions.

I wouldn't back up someone who tries to expose another performer on a magic forum ... or you could be on that end of the stick someday when you decide to sell an eBook, a video, or show us one of your creations on video. Careful now ... it's not a precedence I believe the Café should approve of. Lots could be exposed that way and that's certainly NOT what this forum is about.

I looked at your website and youtube channel and got the answer I was looking for. So you do not claim paranormal abilities. You are a magician/mentalist that has been performing for 20 years or so. This was all a misunderstanding then. Cyberqat thought that you did claim paranormal abilities and that is why he felt ofended. Now that we know you are performing magician/mentalist (actor, host, and all that good stuff) I do think Cyberqat should appoligize to you for trying to expose another magician. That is just my own opinion ofcourse. Anyway, best of luck with your magic Alexandre.

"I wouldn't back up someone who tries to expose another performer on a magic forum..."

You are absolutely correct. But please understand that I did not know whether you actually claim to have paranormal abilities or if that was just part of the performance. But now I know. And just for the record, I never once said I backed him up. I said that if you did claim paranormal abilities, I would be on his side. IF you claimed paranormal abilities ofcourse. But why would I be on his side? Simple. Because I do not believe that anyone in this world has any paranormal ablities or "super powers" other than God Himself.

I for one enjoy Alex videos because above all they are low tech and they are very entertaining. And really that’s why he posts them on Youtube, if you look at all the crap on Youtube you will agree Alex puts out some very entertaining videos. I am shocked at how some will jump on a roller coaster knowing it will crash! Trying to expose performers on a magic forum is a bad judgment call in my books and I hope something has been learned here. Alex is a first rate entertainer, and he has done just that, simple really!!! Now open your minds to being entertained and enjoy the show!!!

PS. AC/DC is perfect for that video...
Thank you Alex
