Hi everyone!
A way back I've taken a video when my assistant and I where practicing the Assistant's Revenge. I would like to have some comments on the things which could be done better at the performance of the video below. Remember it is just a practice video, so it's not the end result. I love the enthusiasm. It was great fun to watch you and your partner get into the moment. But.... If you are really going to present this to people, you are going to need a choreographer. While your assistant may have had some dance class, the routine that the two of you are doing is a bit over the top, and will result in some uninvited criticism of the dancing. While you show promise, you are clearly not a dancer. There are other ways to block the illusion, with flair and movement, that would be as dramatic. |

Nice...it's well on it's way. Follow what the others have said about the dancing and you'll be well on your way.

OK... Prop looks nice and you are certainly enthusiastic.
Replace the rope with straps... you don't look very trapped. AR has to look substantial, and in this one it looks kind of flimsy. Also, whatever is in the back should visually match what is in the front. The sameness is what IMPLIES that "hey, the back is as secure as this stuff on the front. Ideally, one of the things that makes AR look magical is that the curtain should never stop moving- it is supposed to look like an instantaneous switch, not a fast one. I don't know if you made your curtain so it can go all the way around, but that should be the basic implication, that it could... Also, since this doesn't LOOK like anything in the real world,)(the prop in generally, not yours specifically) a bit of "explaning" for instance securing the end with a big Lock, or replacing the straps/rope with chain. Something that visually is familiar and implies "Restraint." This will help sell the illusion. If it were my prop (And I did the Ar for years so have played with it a lot) I would use heavy leather or jute straps instead of the thin rope (or at least 2 inch thick rope) or chain, and whatever I used I would glue or otherwise affix to the zig zaggy back piece so it looked the same. Then, slow it all down until the switch, and do that so that it appears the curtain is always moving. It is a good start!!!

First of all, I think the van Helsing music is a great choice for the two of you and matches the look of the prop. I agree with the "Lizard Man" that you need some sort of restraint other than a small rope. I wasn't as bothered by the lack of continuous curtain movement; as a matter of fact, I sort of liked the "run in-run out" presentation for the switch. You just need to work on your timing to make sure the "run out" doesn't occur at exactly the same time as the "run in".
Also, if you had a way to show that you were still in place as she began to make the run e.g., shove your arm through a slit in the curtain and withdraw it as the switch was made, that could also be effective. Nice construction job, also. For those of you who missed it, here was the construction thread: http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......forum=26
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Thanks for all those reactions!
I certainly can do something with those comments! I'll try and change the "rope" into chains or leather straps and secure it with a big lock. I think I'll keep the run in and out in the performance like Clinton mentioned. Need to work on the timing for that. Greatz Patrick

It is nice! I think you should sort-a keep witht he old way and do the switch as the curtain is going around. The part where she stops on the left and then goes in and you fly out to the right looks like it takes forever. Try it the old fashion way and and get more advice, that's my 2 cents, just think you should try it that way it looks like its instant when done the old fashion way. Keep up the work your doing good!

I love the idea of the rope (should be straps) being wrapped in the front... Awesome.....
Keep of the creativity!

It was nice, the dancing maybe a little too much, but nothing serious. Good luck! Nice music too!

Once you stand against the frame (while they tie you up) you have to stop moving and stand still - this helps the effect! same after the switch, assistant needs to stands still till the ropes/chains are removed.
Curtis: The idea of using red/white safety tape being wrapped in the front is from Peter Vogel who suggested it to Marcel (price of illusion) The good this about this tape is that you can cut it open to free your assistant, saving time releasing her from the prop. I'm sure Patrick got inspired by him since all of them are from Holland... |

Thought this would be nice to use, it's handy to release someone by cutting the rope which you've mentioned.

Yes, straps would be better. And one extra spot the straps should go is over your wrist. You arms are too loose. People might think you freed your way thru the front with your loose arms. If your arms and wrist were strapped to the frame it would look more amazing.
Whoever is locked up should never move around for three reasons. One reason is it makes the prop look a little flimsy because of the sleight wobble. If you be still, the prop will look nore sturdier. Another reason not to move around is because it is making it look more like you freed yourself. If you stay still looking straight toward the audience, it looks like you are more securely locked. And the third reason is because of showmanship. The attention should be on one of you at a time. When you both move the same time it can take some of the attention off of what is really happening, who to follow. You might want to try putting (half) steel brackets on front of the frame to lock your wrist. Remember it is "Assistant's Revenge", not "Magician's Revenge". This is the first time I ever saw the magician got locked up first. It will be more pleasing to the audience to see an assistant outsmarted the magician. In other words, the assistant should be locked up first. The pause the assistant did was terrible because the left stage audience can not see her at all. They are wondering for a moment "where is everyone, are they in there together?" But if it was done continually, everything will blend in. At the beginning when you are both dancing, never dance behind the prop. It is bad showmanship because the prop is in the way, even though it is see thru. You and your assistant are the stars, not the prop. I got to give you credit for it. You both did a good job with no support from any professional using the prop. I like the dance moves. |

Okay, time for an update.
We've began blank, and put something new together now. We've added some new moves, and tried to do something with the advice givin here. I didn't add chains or straps to the Assistant's Revenge. We used the same rope again, but now in another direction so it looks like a cross. I would like to have some comments if we're improving, according to you guys. And If you think we haven't, good advice is always welcome to us.. This is the old video: http://media.putfile.com/Assistants-Revenge-Practice This is the new one: http://media.putfile.com/Assistants-Revenge-2 Loading may take a while, sorry for that. Greats Patrick
