3 Quick Tips
1) Arrive early. 2) Dress professionally. 3) Only use effects you can do in your sleep. A Whole Bunch of Long Tips: Don't expect every eighth grader to have a coin, bill or ring. Don't carry a whole lot that relies on borrowing an item. If nobody has what you need, you will be a magicless magician. If you must do a trick that needs a borrowed item make sure you have what you need in a back pocket, just in case. Don't expect to have a table or other surface handy. Expect to have to work your tricks in your or your spectator's hands. You need to have tricks that reset very quickly. You are only going to be there 45 minutes. Bring a small number (less that the number of pockets you have) of "ideal" routines and expect to do each one a whole bunch. Then bring one or two "special" effects. Expect to do each one of these once or twice. You mentioned CMH, Prof Nightmare, Sponge Balls, Recap, $100 switch, Dishonest Abe, & NFW. These 7 all seem like GREAT choices for repeatable routines. 7 is a lucky number . IMO, the ring flight is too "risky". Deja Vu. Decide on 2 or 3 tricks to start the night with. Go around and do these tricks for everybody that will watch early in the performance. That way, nobody can say they didn't see the magician. Also, you will quickly spot problem spectators (grabby, heckler, snooty). Don't forget to introduce yourself during this time, too. Memorize where each trick and prop are. Put them back where you find them . Relax, the audience can't fire you. Speaking of which, make sure you dazzle the people running the event and the adults. They are the ones with the money Hope you found some information you could use. |

It helps to anticipate anything that can go wrong. It helps when you've anticipated the ways that an audience can mess-up the routine. Audiences quickly give-up on trying to mess with me -- I'm obviously prepared and have seen it all, over and over.
It helps if the audience can tell that you're not there to make them look stupid, but instead to simply entertain them. It also helps that they can sense that you're in control of the situation -- you call the shots, not the audience. I also don't have to acknowledge anyone who is misbehaving, because I can focus on those who are there to have fun. I've even been known to suggest that the group ditch a jerk so that I can show them something special, and they go for the idea. Why not test the routines, on real people, before the gig? |

I would certainly keep the small tricks, ie. Doctor Daley's last trick, since it is small. Don't carry around tons of things, since you can get very mixed up and screw up while fumbling through your pockets.

1) Give some thought to the fact that a lot of the time you probably won't have a table to put stuff on.
2) Learn several "sets" of 3-5 tricks and do these as opposed to just throwing stuff together as you go. |

I am working on two sets of 3-4 tricks to do. I'm trying to focus on just a few tricks so that, as has been advised here, I can do them in my sleep. This way I can concentrate on the presentation. I forgot about Daryl's color changing knives. I love this routine and it's an instant reset, so
I'm going to add it. Keep the advice coming, and thanks! |

For such a potentially tough audience I think this could be the best advice. Also, test the routines on "un-real" people as well. That is, fellow magicians and family members who you can go to and get honest opinions. (Magician's opinions must be taken with a grain of salt but they can be a great help with technical problems (flashing, etc.). Go back and read all the above posts. They pretty much say it all.

I'd seriously advise against bringing knives to a school function

Strolling? Hmmm... I would have 3 tricks, maximum, that are bulletproof... you know them so well you can JAZZ... that way all you need to worry about is your upersonality.
Be a fun happy guy, spread the cheer.

You're only doing 45 minutes...the time will fly especially if you KEEP MOVING! Don't get stuck in one spot because then you'll only do one show. If you do like 3 tricks then move along to a different crowd the time will fly. Sure some kids will follow you but don't worry...it's like hearing a favorite song, especially when there is no way they can figure out how you did the effects. My suggestions from your list are:
spongeballs $100 bill switch Rubberbands (CMH) Daley's last trick Recapped is great Dishonest Abe Ungimmicked Hopping Halves Professor's Nightmare Those 8 effects will definately last you the 45 minutes. I'm sure you'll only end up repeating the same 3-4 anyway. Everyone is right about the kids grabbing so be careful and polite. I would stay away from color changing knives in a school and also stay away from the ring flight. Most important: HAVE FUN AND BE FUN. |
