I'm a card guy, but I'd like to perform a ring on string or ring on stick effect during my routing.
I have a decent library (but no Tarbells), wonder if anyone could recommend a quick, impromptu effect that is good. I'm not really looking for the greatest effect in the world, just one that I can throw in and that might be in one of the books that I already own. Thanks. Phil |

Phill, Scott Guinn has a very nice routine. Also, there are many other resources such as Bob Miller 's relentless ring and string video and Jay Scott Berry has a video called Symphony of a ribbon and ring. Also Greg Wilson's video Ring leader is excellent.
I hope this helps, vinny |

Wilson's tape is packed full. I really like the Ron Bauer "The cursed Ring": it is a ring on stick (pencil) routine that costs about 10.00 or so (not sure). It goes through everything: the why's and the why nots. The only problem is finding a ring with a ? mark on it. I am still looking. I think you could use any "interesting looking" ring.

As a card guy, you might be interested in a Marc DeSouza ring and string routine where, at the end of the routine, the ring disappears and is found in a card box that has been lying on the table.

For a quickie ring on string. I'd also suggest Mike Powers trick called "Swinger."
It's not a very long trick. This is basically all that happens: A ring is borrowed and hung on a string. The spectator holds their hand out. The dangling ring is placed in their hand. They close their hand around the ring. The magicians holds onto the ends of the string. When the spectators hand is open their ring is no longer on the string. I know I didn't really need to explain all that because it's a basic description of most ring on string tricks, but since a quickie was asked for here, The above is all that this trick does. You can of course tie it into any ring on string routine. The strength of this effect is that after the ring is strung on the string it can be dangled freely and swung into their hand. Hence the Name "Swinger." Ron Jaxon |

I recommend going right to the source. The legendary Ray Grismer started the ring and string craze, and his video teaches a number of items you'll recognize from other sources (usually uncredited!). The quality of the video from a production standpoint isn't very good, but the material is first rate. It's on VHS only right now, called "Ray's Ring and Rope Routines," published by Busby.

As usual, each reply is full of exactly the information I need. I don't own any of the books or videos referenced, so I'll do a little more research on the one's each of you recommended.
Your recommendations, however, are priceless. Once again, the Café saves me a ton of time and I get great, real-life information without the hype. When I get one of these effects or routines perfected to the point I actually perform it, I'll post reactions, etc. Thanks so much. Cheers! Phil |

Daryl has an easy routine on one of Fooler Dooler videos. Ring on string ends up on stick.

Daryl also has a video of all rope magic and it's excellent. There's at least 4 or 5 tricks with rings in it.

Dan Garrett's Faustus Ring is a great finger ring on string routine. It is found in his CloseUp Connivery tape and in some of his lecture notes.

Try Michael Skinners Ring on Stick. This is the trick he actually performed for Frank Sinatra. It blew Frank away and Michael Skinner always said that if he could only perform one trick it would be Ring on Stick.

Also, see "Magic With Finger Rings" by Jerry Mentzer. It has write-ups of a number of excellent routines and effects. It includes material from Jim Ryan, Scotty York, Dan Garrett, Steve Dusheck and others.
