I see we have our favorite effect as a subject. We was the poorest decision you ever made in a trick. One of mine, and I am sure we all have many, was Apple to Banana. You have card with apple on it and one with a banana picture on it. You end up with the apple disappearing only to appear as an apple core. I thought it was great looking when it was demonstrated but I have still (eight years later) come up with any patter that would excite me to use it.

Do the effect and then end it with the thoughts on choosing the wrong fruit. Adam and Eve, made the wrong choice and it cost them eternity. If you make the wrong choice, it could drive you bananas

Thanks Terry, good idea. Does anyone else have a trick they bought and is just didn't live up to your expectations?

While there certainly have been a lot of effects I've purchased and wished I hadn't. A couple in particular are of note. Recently picked one up called SPRUNG that was a real disappointment. It is a walk through a Slinky effect. Very hard to do and not impressive at all when performed. I didn't return it because I'm playing with doing it using plastic slinkies...and I have a rule...if you want to use someone's idea...buy their effect...even if you make it yourself differently (even if it doesn't work well I suppose). Still haven't perfected it...but it will be much more impressive than what the product was.
However, probably the worst in the last couple of years was the effect Box of Baghdad. I don't think you can even get that anymore. Fortunately the folks who sold it to me took it back and gave credit. It looked great (red and blue swords and everything)...but funny thing...it didn't work. The illusion was to put one's hand in it and then have the swords pushed through it. Well...an adult hand wouldn't fit in it and a kids hand could be pulled out way too easily...like that wasn't going to happen. Also any tipping of the box meant the swords would fall out. It was clearly an idea that went wrong somewhere. Kif

I bought this rope and when I cut it, it didn't restore... guess you have to buy some manuscript or something to make it work
okay, now onto a real reply Bought acrobatic silks, where you have an odd colored silk on one end of a wand and 2 similar silks also on the wand, and eventually the odd silk switches into the middle... it is just not deceptive, the silk sizes "change" tipping the method and the wand is so thick you could almost conceal a dove in there...needless to say.it is collecting dust |

Torn & Restored Heart. When I bought it and first opened it up, I was actually surprised to see that the method was the most basic method known. The Gospel presentation that came with it was pretty much generic. When I purchased it, I didn't ask any questions, I just assumed that there was going to be some new method other than the one I had already known. I felt like I paid for just pre-cutout hearts. Last week, when I bought more refills for the kiltrillion time, I said it would be the last time I purchased anymore. From now on I'm making my own! (he, he)

Once I purchased a Bang Wand...the wand that has a report at both ends. Only, this one worked about 10% of the time. In other words, I got little bang for the buck.

Auto-Match-ic trick by El Duco. $30 for a box of matches. It was the biggest nothing trick I ever bought.

Astrosphere... from Tannen's, and at $20 more than others, no less. No research, admittedly. A plastic zombie that couldn't be separated to accomodate the gimmick (as directed in the enclosed instructons,) an inch and a half of foil tape (?), a crappy cloth that could have been my mother's hair net, and IT. And the instructions included contained no hint as to how to accomplish the routine as outlined in in the Tannen catalog (from which I based the purchase.) Buh bye, Tannens!

It is nice to know we are not alone. All of us has this stuff hidden at the bottom of our magic box.

Mine would be a set of linking ropes. the gimmicked rope was so obvious because of the dirty fingerprints and excess glue all over the gimmick. You would think whoever made the prop should have known to at least wash their hands before handling white rope.

Don't feel bad Heart...I think I have the same set of ropes. Though I have to say that is not the worst effect purchased. I am going to go with Backstage...pure impulse buy. It uses a large playing card and the magician shows how the trick is done (classic sucker). Only problem is I don't use cards in anything I do...so guess what has sat on my shelf for the past 9 years...

That's true. I guess the worst purchase would be the several items I've bought that I never get around to using or practicing with. Nothing wrong with the items, just impulse buys I should have never made.

It is not really the trick... it is the presentation and the individual!
Mark is so right on the issue of others KILLING with a trick others can not do... But isn't that why so many people feel gospel magic is bad... it is not the tricks, it is not the message, it is the messenger Recently I had someone give me a gospel effect and I really did nto think I would use it... I did not buy it becasue I NEVER thought I woudl use it.. Guess what??? This weekend I needed something to fit a story I have told MANY ways before and this crazy thing I thougth was not worth the money happened to fit the bill... I thought about it... prayed about it... and then got a good idea to TWEAK it... the aults loved it, the kids loved it, and BETTER yet... they got the point! By the way, have seen some really CHEAP looking PRO magic stuff that I would not buy made by some of the TOP people... again, it has NEVER been about the prop... it is about the ARTIST! |

Nice way to kill the thread GENE!!
HA It is true though...there are some things that Oz and Wilde do that just do not fit me and I would not be able to pull off. The one in mind is "Off the Meter". That is an expensive prop that just would not be right for me and would make this list. The Wilde Character though can use it very well. But lets face it.....there is a lot of just plain junk out there as well that just does not work right. It never hurts to review what you do have when coming up with a new effect and as long as the prop actually works like it is suppose to, you will be amazed what new life you can breathe into an old prop. |

Mine was this book called the bible - full of tricks and stunts like walking on water but not one method to be found. Waste of money.
