Hey everyone, just recently, my local school system decided to start offering Ice Hockey at schools in my area. Since I've had a little experience playing floor hockey and I've always liked watching it on tv, I signed up for my school's team! I was wondering if I could have some advice on playing ice hockey from the fellow Ice Hockey player's on the Café? And just a little magical fact about this, my school is the same school where Lance Burton, Steve Bargatze, and past IBM President Bob Escher all went!

Just make sure that you have all the right gear and you will be fine.
Also it is worth getting your self a set of inlines and doing long distances and sprint training on your own time to bring up your fitness level. It is also a good chance to practice your turns and fast stops. But yeah it's not that hard and is lots of fun!! |

Awesome man!! Hockey is a great sport! Keep in mind that it can be a very fast and intense game. I'm sure since you guys will be playing strictly for fun that the physical contact will be limited. Keep your head up, especially around the corners. Fighting is not good... unless of course your opponent deserves it or drops the gloves.
There is not a better feeling than scoring a goal. Every goal for me is like the first one. Second best feeling is setting up a goal (an assist). VERY important is to keep yourself hydrated. It is unbelievable the amount of energy it takes to play the game. It looks so easy on tv. There is a saying written in many locker rooms that it's best to get in shape to play hockey and not play hockey to get in shape. That I believe. I haven't played in the last few months because since the arrival of my little one I've made a few pounds appear around my frame. When you get home, open up your bag and dry out your equipment. Seriously. You don't want to be that guy who stinks up the whole locker room. The locker rooms reek as it is. Adding to the reekness is not cool. Most important thing is have FUN!! If you find it hard at first that's normal... it will get easier... but just a bit. Andre p.s. Water Bottle (your new best friend) |

Cody, I have a question, since your original post doesn't make it clear:
are you still in high school? Or are you a 27 year-old, 285 pound ex-Marine who just wants an excuse to knock a few high schoolers around? |

Cody Comet is a great hockey name. Especially if you can skate. Not as good as ‘Rocket’ Richard maybe. But still a good one.

He's definately got the name (if that's his real name, which I doubt), but does he have the game? Cody, if you got game, you may have to make that your legal name. Great hockey name.

To go along with the joke, yes, I'm still in high school. But that would be a good thing to do when I get older though! And Cody Comet is just my stage name and profile name, but I do agree that it is a great hockey name!
Andre-Thanks for your great advice. Your probably right about the limited physical contact since everyone else that signed up said that they really don't have much experience. I hope to have lots of fun playing and hopefully, my team has a great first season! |

Cody the name is not important Duval Love, I. M. Hipp, and Lovey Smith were football players names, and Rocket Richard's real first name was Maurice.

Since Maurice "The Rocket " Richard was mentioned, I highly recommend the film "The Rocket" if you can find it at your video store. The movie is awesome and was made only a couple years ago. The man was an AMAZING player and person.

Thanks for the recommendation, even though due to Hurricane Ike knocking out the power all the way up here in Louisville, it may be a while before I can follow up on that and it may be a while before I get to start hockey too. But since school's been out due to the power outage, I'm not sure about that. As long as there's still a team, that won't matter! And fortunatly, power is starting to come back in Louisville, little by little.
