Peter, having read your other post I know you do/have worked the streets (any many venues). After working the streets for a few months, I'm "auditioning" for a restaurant tonight. If the manager wants me to work for tips, would it be okay to use hat lines from the streets to attract tips? I know you just avoid the whole tip thing yourself: so do I, which I have learned from previous restaurants. Just curious about your thoughts, being a street performer, about using hat lines to help with tips. After being on the streets, I am more confident if the manager asks me to go outside and deal with the waiting people, having been doing the hard busking life for the past few months. Thanks in advance on your input.

Nolan,
Personally, as you know, I would avoild the whole "tip" thing like the plague. But, if it has to be done, it has to be done. That said, I would most defintely NOT use busking hat lines to generate tips. The vast majority of the customers are there for the food, not the entertainment, and "blackmailing" them into tipping for that unrequested entertainment -- no matter how good it is -- is unfair. Going outside and working the line is another story; you would probably be all right using hat lines there, since that situation is true busking. But a world of warning: Once you work the line, you can't go inside again that night and work the tables; it would be tacky. However, the bottom line is still: Use your own judgment when you get to the job; your skill and experience when you get there, are more valuable than anyone else trying to tell you what to do, from a distance, and not knowing the situation. Good luck. |

The manager at the establishment I am working now is more concerned about people waiting. The wait, on average, is 2-3 hours for a weekend night. What I did last night was set up my street act outside of the establishment and let the people know that after they put their name on the list to come back out and watch the show. I basically do by doorway type act infront of the restaurant. After working the streets all day then hitting the restaurant at night, not that much different. I drop some of jokes and hat lines. The manager is paying me half in cash and half in gift certificates for the place. With the amount of the frogskins I get per night dropping, would you see you okay to through in a hat line or two as well as making sure they tell the manager they enjoy the show. Thanks for you help and tips.

No, just a newly open big name place in a small town.

Nolan,
What you're doing is not restaurant work. It sounds like you're still working the streets, just in the parking lot. Wow, 2-3 hours to get in, how many shows are you doing for them? People really wait that long? People here have a fit if they wait 30 min. I'm sorry I'm not Peter... But I met him once. Hi Peter!

The wait can get that long. Normally, it's about 1 and a 1/2 hours. I work outside because the manager knows the wait is long and he wants them to be entertained out there. If the wait dies down, which sometimes happens around 9 or 9:30, I then go inside and hit the tables.
