All right, before anyone brings this up, yes, I did do a search on this topic. Whether or not I searched correctly is questionable. In any event... I am working on a "birthday"-oriented theme for a local church. You know the type...every child who has a birthday during that quarter is invited to a birthday event. This particular event is for 60+ children, and will be held in the church facility. They prefer a gospel-based program, which is my calling. And being in December, the tie-in with Jesus' birth is evident. I am calling out for your favorite birthday effects/routines, as I do not have any currently (i.e, birthday cake in dove pan, etc.) I must also say, I do not do fire effects in a church setting. SO, here we go.... any thoughts? Thank you!

What about that effect where you keep pulling boxes from a gift bag...I've got a great source where you can get the jumbo version for under $20 I believe. It would tie into Christmas, has audience participation and ties into Birthdays too since we all like gifts.

I like Terry's idea as it plays big and packs small.
You could borrow a spectators ring etc (I borrow my wife's wedding ring) then a set of brightly colored nesting boxes. You could decorate with wrapping paper. Each box is wrapped in each other till you get to the final box last box of course is small locked box with the borrowed ring from the beginning the "treasure" of sorts...or go one step further and have the ring tied with a silk of Christ and talk about the true gift. Or make the boxes birthday gifts. Just brain storming...err more of a drizzle but ah well. |

I've used the the Axtell Drawing Board and the routine for it titled "Birthday Magic". It's really very good and you don't have to be a vent.

I also use what is now called "The Educated Duck." I'm fortunate to have an original Warren Hamilton version (Jo-Anne the Duck).
There are various routes to take with this for a birthday party. One is to have the duck spell out a certain kind of gift such as "doll", "Wii," etc. Then ask the duck what the greatest gift is and have it spell "Jesus." I did this routine in Russia back in 1991 at orphanages and children's hospitals. It was the first legalized Christmas in over 70 years. The programs I was part of were billed as "Happy Birthday, Jesus" parties. I had an interpreter and used a blank deck on which I wrote the Russian alphabet. I asked him what would be a good name for the duck and he said "Cindy." It's a great effect that you can make a killer routine out of, have a lot of laughs, and convey a tremendous message. As an aside to the effect, I'd like to share about my Russian trip and "Cindy the Duck." My interpreter (Igor) was an atheist at the time I met him. He had been part of the Communist Youth Organization. We spent a week together and he faithfully interpreted the gospel for me (at least I think he did!). The day before I left Russia, he asked me to visit his house and meet his wife and son. When I got to the house she asked me to tell her about Jesus. She didn't understand English so he interpreted. I shared the gospel and her response was, "This is all new to me. I need to think about it." Igor agreed. When I left I told him that I believed God brought us together. Igor replied, "For you God, for me chance." We kept in touch as best we could through letters, couriers, and FAX (no Internet access for him back then - and not much for me either!). In the Fall of that year Billy Graham held a Crusade in Moscow. Igor attended and placed his faith in Christ. He has been working with a Christian organization ever since helping reach many young people for Christ. I believe he has reached hundreds, if not thousands more for Christ than I have. It all started with a wooden duck named Cindy! Terry

Terry, if you have that "source" for the stage size flower/dream bag I'm interested. I have a stage nest of boxes, but they're built like industrial boxes (locks, etc.), but I'm trying to think of how I can incorporate them into a "present" scenario. At this point, I'm watching my budget and trying to come up with routines for props I already have (typical stratosphere, silk chamber, etc. stuff.) Have never done paper hat/cake tears, but they sound interesting. Any other thoughts would be much appreciated. They do ask for a gospel-type presentation, although I do include some routines "just for fun." I'm good at developing gospel routines, so if you have favorite birthday effects, please pass them on. Thanks again. Steve |

OK, I do not know the name of the orginal version of this trick. I think it is a Larry Becker idea.
In the orginal version there were all these wonderful prizes (a million dollars, a car, etc), but the helper only won some small thing. I remember thinking, that is NOT the way to do this. So, I turned it around, the "presents" were awful! A one year subscription to the poisonous snake of the month club, liver jello (thank you David Ginn), you get the idea, the last gift, which they won, was a bear!!!!! OK, it was a teddy bear, but you get the idea. The envelope is forced with the classic "hot rod" force, then you turn them around and read the prizes (show the picture. This could easily be changed to talk about gifts you didn't want, or were no good, but the one birthday gift that was the best ever is the one Jesus gave us. Just a thought. |

Steve,
You could decorate the big box of your nest of boxes as a present, then let the smaller boxes look as they do normally. Also, you can decorate your main prop case as a giant present and have everything you take out be a "gift". Needle Thru Balloon can be tailored as a birthday-type routine by talking about balloons at a birthday. Tony http://www.herestony.com |

Taking Mark's idea and 'modifying' it a bit.......
I use a similar routine, but with balloons instead of envelopes. I use six different colored 11" round balloons. Five balloons are pre-loaded with 3x5 cards folded and 1 with 260Q twisting balloons. I then display them on balloon cups and sticks placed in holes drilled in a length of 1 1/2" ABS plastic pipe (ABS is similar to PVC pipe, only ABS is black) attached to a stand. Going through the Hot-Rod force, the volunteer makes their "free" choice. The remaining balloons are then popped to reveal their contents. NOTE: For popping the balloons I found a clip-art picture of a thumbtack, enlarged it and glued it to a piece of foam board and cut out the shape. By placing a sewing pin near the "point" of the clipart you can actually pop the balloons - this gives it a bit of visual comedy. Five of the balloons each contain a 3x5 card folded with the "less than ideal" presents ie: liver jello etc. The 'force' balloon contains several 260Q twisting balloons. Those in turn are inflated and twisted into ________ (whatever fits the theme etc.) and given to the volunteer. The six brightly colored 11" balloons add a wonderful bit of color to your show. It also "packs flat and plays big" and is a wonderful "economically sensitive" effect. A link for balloon cups and sticks (straws) http://www4.mailordercentral.com/tmyersm......ber=3011 Hope this all makes sense and helps. peace, phill

All right, now... don't make me come over there! Gotta stick up for Terry!
Seriously, the suggestions are great. The nest of boxes is going around in my mind, with the reappearance of maybe a cross that has been signed by all the kids in the last box. Get it? The Ultimate Gift for ALL? Problem is, that's appx 60 kids, on a cross.. maybe foam, but still.... Like the balloon idea, but since EVERYONE here is celebrating birthdays, I might feel like I'm shorting the rest. You ain't seen "economically sensitive" til you've seen me lately! Guess I'm going to have to break down and buy a dove pan... the cake thing, you know. Again, any ideas that feature gospel-related twists to them are appreciated. You guys are good! Steve |

Steve, you were looking for the Large Dream Bag. If you go to http://www.barrymitchellproducts.com here sells the large "Dream Bag" I believe it is
$ 90.00 or so. I just purchased a NEW on from him on August. He has a good price and that is the BEST Dream Bag on the market. Keep in mind you can get the $ 25.00 Dream Bags but they do not last very long and the flowers look horrible in my opinion. Rodney

There's no need for him to expend a lot of money on the dream bag. You can purchase 4 of them for the price of one of Barry's. If you bought just 2, you have a backup, I've used it in a theater and with the routine I do it went over great with a big surprize in the end...(don't ask, I'm not telling)
I don't think audiences will be any more impressed with the $90 version over the $20 and this is coming from someone who is very picky about his equipment. |

I have also done a routine from my standard children's bday show, which uses a ch---- bag and a set of mismade bday silks (and also 4 solid colour silks), as a part of my show for a Birthday for Jesus celebration.
