I generally get a call from a client and book the show over the phone. If they have my biz card then they have my email. This way I can book a show while I'm driving I don't have to write anything down. I simply tell them to send me all the info in an email. Date, time, location ...ect and I will reply to that email confirming that I will be there at said time and date and for what fee ect. This makes the process very easy. When I get home all the info is on my computer all written out for me. I can take my time and write a nice reply email and enter the info on my calendar. This has worked as a receipt for me for the past 10 years. Emails are getting more and more accepted as legal documentation. When I work corporate restaurants like Fridays they generally want a written receipt at the end of every shift. The invoice booklets from Office Max work fine for that. Make sure you have one with a carbon copy for yourself cause they love to lose their receipts and you can always give them a copy that way. They make receipt books with multiple carbon copies which is nice.

I always send out 2 "confirmation of bookings" detailing, venue, timing, amount, etc, I also have a cancellation cause- I they cancel with less than 3 weeks notice, I am due half the payment. I then include a nice covering letter asking them to return one of the contracts, and a stamped, addressed envelope, all the work on their part is removed.
Hope that helps Nick |

I have always got 50% in order to secure the booking, which is returned with the signed contract, and then the remaining 50% no later than 14 days before the event.
Last night was the first night was the first time I didn't have the remaining 50% beforehand, the cheque for whatever reason did not arrive. She told me she would get the wedding planner to give it to me on the day, which I was ok with as the wedding planner worked for the venue and I had it all confirmed with them. |

As for giving them your banking details, I would be quite hesitant about that. If they desire to pay you electronically, and you are not setup for credit cards, I would have them wire the money through Paypal. Anyone can do it with or without an account; and you don't have to give them your info - remember, they're paying you. You're not paying them. This is just my $0.02 worth; however, it's tainted with a healthy dose of background and experience from my "regular job" in information security.
Tally-ho! And Tuscarora too!

In most of the corporate/business shows that I do, they ask for an invoice upfront. MS Word has a number of templates that can easily be modified for this purpose.

Something new I have added with the new economy.
Booking fee ... this is a $100 non refundable security, payable instantly on PayPal. Go to my website and use the Donate button on the first page. They have 24 hours to do this. If the show is over $500 or others are involved I get the booking fee per person or 50% of large events. This in not returnable, however they may apply it to a future performance if there is an unforeseen circumstance.
