Actually that clip should be included in the training session of new TV-hosts to learn them how NOT to behave and to pay respect to the guests they invite instead.. Just watched a vid with Jeff Mc Bride, a VERY great performer IMHO,where he talks about the respect he pays his audience whilst performing and his performance does show this all the time... As mentioned, this goes the other way around too, for hosts on shows, their job is not to make a fool of their guests, but to help them trough the event... A lot of good and experienced performers would have had a very hard time to go through what DR did go through, performers that know their bizz, are experienced, but just probably aren't prepared to respond to attacks like the ones from DL, because they themselves are nice ppl. Lonnie Chevrie comes to mind, how would he have reacted? I don't know, but I think he's such a nice guy he would have had problems in fighting back...oh well, when prepared, one could smash a 45 on the table right from the beginning of ones show, but safely out of reach of a guy like DL, one never knows what a such one could find out to do, but it might set the mood... Alright, let me throw my 2 pennies in...
Letterman was not a "jerk" per se. He was LETTERMAN. If you go on that show expecting anything else but the man himself you are sadly mistaken. He was just being himself and trying to have fun with DR. As far as Roth goes, let me preface what I am about to say with...I have seen David lecture and I love his coin work. He is by far one of the best if not THE best "Coin men" to ever grace this planet, but come on...can we say personality. The performance is so canned it's ridiculous. I feel that the only reason David was "livid" as posted earlier, is because he did not know how to handle the situation. He was so intent on getting the trick and his patter out that DL's interruptions were something that he couldn't handle. He was frustrated and you could tell. Big mistake...never let them see you sweat..lol Now granted you only have a few minutes out there and you want to get done what you set out to do, but you really have to just roll with what you get when performing for real people, which I am afraid DR does not do. At least in my opinion. The guy can lecture and perform for magicians and his skills with coins are way beyond mine, but the fact of the matter is he is NOT a performer. Personally I think that whole one coin routine he does is just a slap in the face for the people watching. It's not entertaining, its a "Watch how good I am" and "What me make an ass out of you" routine. Visual yes, entertaining, no. With that said, I am suiting up in my fireproof suit so I can withstand the flames from the sheep. |

I worked at Callin's Magic shop for many years and saw many performers come in looking for the oldest magic shop in the Northwest. Dick Cavet walked in one day and I got a chance to talk with him about magic. He told me that he had David Roth over to his apartment in New York for a party he was having. (Imagine the people that he knows)
He said that he entertained his guests for three hours while sitting behind a table and never repeated a trick! Dick Cavett used the word entertained so I am going to guess that he meant it, and that his friends were real people not magicians. I think that Dans early post said it all as to how David Roth handled David Letterman. Like a Pro. Jim

:) Your opinion is as good as anybodies and a basis for discussion...a good one.. I'll not participate, I've said enough already. BUT still, Letterman is a host on a show and he has to obey the rules of showbizz.. A suggestion would be -if he always is like that- simply not, and this goes for anybody, to appear on his show..NOBODY simply should appear there, if his main goal is to make fun of his guests!!!! THAT would teach them! But I know, ppl are so angious to get on TV, thye'll do so at any price, but IMHO, the price can be far to high.. Boycot being a guest at his show..it's that simple and unrealistic If you re a singer, a well known entertainer of any kind, and they envitate you, tell them, Letterman is a plain jerk - make headlines out of this at the newspapers!- and he can run his own show by himself, if anybody then cares to watch.. I doubt it! That's the only way...

Rather than flame... it occurs that there might be some uses for a squirting half dollar.
That said, the lines about the drinks etc were prompted by the tropical way of wearing the jacket w sleeves rolled up. The line about faxing was also well intended. As to the presentation versus audience rapport stuff... you got it. The audience on that show is DAVID LETTERMAN, and not the studio audience which is there to watch DAVID LETTERMAN be entertained by his guests. Let's stay away from personal comments about David Roth. He practices his material to certain tempo, and in sets he once told us in NY. Tremendous dilligence. The skills for flowing with audience reaction ... were probably set aside to get the material done in his allotted time. Just my guess there.

From what I have seen of Letterman, unless you are HUGE star you don't get the respect you deserve. Again, that's Letterman and you shouldn't expect less. I have seen him give many (not so big) performers a hard time. I feel sorry for them, but still laugh. IMO, Letterman is a genius. You hate to see one of your own have to endure his wackiness, but you should expect that going in. Go on Oprah if you want polite and cordial. I just gave my opinion on the performances that I have seen of DR. I totally respect what he can do and what he has provided the magic community. As far as what Dick Cavet says, I guess I would have to believe that too. It's his opinion. As that was mine. |

Another suggestion would be that if you don't like David Letterman and you think he's a jerk, don't watch the show. Problem solved.

You tell the producers of the programs instead, they are producing rubbish, getting you trapped to buy a set by telling you, they are producing interesting programs and doing quite the contrary.. That's how problems get solved, not by shutting it down! Think twice before telling me what I should watch and what I shouldn't !!

Hey, they want to watch him send out Kumar and his buddy to strange places, to drop watermellons off buildings, to jump at a wall in a velcro suit.
That is the show. And folks like it.

And you and I can continue to watch and enjoy it, as we are entitled. Seems pretty logical to me. But since I apparently suck at logic, what do I know? -Dan |
