Ah yeah the Tran case--that has been in the news for awhile.
Looks like the dealers gave everyone up--what a surprise.

Yep, thought I heard bout that one some time back. Guess the case is back in the news, I've seen it on some poker boards I read.
Strange to see so many Vietnamese names. A big drug bust locally netted a bunch of vietnamese as well. Are they that active or do they get busted because they are conspicuous? |

Oh, I know about the gamble in them.
It's just strange that the big busts I've seen lately net a disproportionate number of vietnamese. Not just gaming, but drugs too. Wonder if it's the culture, the cops or just a big coincidence. |

That's funny because I used to work at casino rama from day one and the same crew hit the place for about half million, before travelling across the states, then back to rama again where... As for their " work" theres nothing fancy, just straight cojones...

Man, I just wasted 20 whole minutes trying to find a couple of links I posted on this forum about gambling in Asia, and I couldn't find them. I went back and re-read almost every post I've ever made here. I guess it's likely the post was deleted.
Anyway, you can just google Macau, as Uhrenschmied suggested. But those articles were pretty interesting. Statistically, the Vietnamese are the biggest gamblers in the world. The Chinese are also VERY heavy gamblers. If you go read some articles about Macau, you'll find out that the Chinese also gamble differently than westerners. Compared to Vegas gamblers they make many more bets per hour, and while the bets may be lower in real money, they represent a MUCH higher percentage of their income. They also prefer games that move very quickly: the strategy is to get more bets in, not to rely on skill. I'm pretty sure that Baccarat is the most popular game on Macau. In Hong Kong itself the ponies are by far the most popular thing to put your money on. Second comes soccer, which they don't even play themselves: they just have huge betting halls where you can bet on soccer all over the rest of the world. It's wild stuff. |

Many of them became very big community leaders. Many of their kids are as American as anyone. But there is an undercurrent in that community of people who want to be big shots. So they play the big shot game. And they get caught. It's not an Asian thing. It's not a Vietnamese thing. It just happens. But by and large these are very intelligent people. If they can read English and watch a DVD, they can learn anything anyone else can learn. Gambling skill knows no ethno-cultural bounds.

Well,I live in Italy I didn't know almost anything of what you've said.
In my question there wasn't absolutely an ethnic aspect, but I think it's difficult(but probably possible) to learn how-to ski while living in an exotic island. |

I have to back up stoneunhinged's post. I worked in the late '90s for a small company that did VoIP into mainland China and spent a lot of time in both Hong Kong and China. What amazed the hell out of me is that Chinese will bet on anything, it doesn't have to even be a gambling type of situation. "I'll bet you this circuit won't work", "Bet you this guy can't sing", etc. etc. etc.
