I picked up a set of Ravel Super Cups in a lot of other stuff on eBay.
Size is nice, though they are very lightweight aluminum cups. Question: Can these things be polished ? The finish is sort of a dull, matte aluminum . Not unattractive, but I was wondering if it is possible to polish these or maybe have them plated ? I have no idea what I'm talking about because I'm not a cup expert , but figured this is the place to ask. Is it even possible to polish aluminum ? And is plating too expensive ? (I'm guessing probably more than if I just purchased a nice plated set of cups brand new. ) |

David,
I have had good success using Mother’s brand Mag & Aluminum Polish on aluminum items. I then follow it up with Mequires brand Mirror Glaze car polish. Good luck, Bruce |

They were finished with a matte type finish polish. You would need to buff them.
you can buff them on a buffing wheel to get them more shiny then clean with flitz when needed. Mobius |

Thanks for the buffing and polishing tips, BCS and Mobius303 .
Pete, these are definitely aluminum, but I think I recall seeing the chromed plastic ones , too , many years ago. (Disneyland Magic Shop sold these I think ? ) I looked these up on Bill Palmer's Cups & Balls Museum . You can see them on this page , about 2/3's of the way down the page : Ravel Super Cups |

I have a set of these, purchased from Tannnens many years ago. The came with a set of large puff balls.
Jake did a set based on these in copper, called "Classic Style Cups & Balls Copper" |

I have a set of those I bought many years ago. They are aluminum and they do bend very easily. I lost the puff balls but the cups are still in fairly good shape.
It's not the size of the wand that matters, it's the "magic" in it...

I absolutely love the look of these cups, I hate beads on cups, hate'em. I use my classic style cups from RNT2 as much as possible. Congrats on the find!

I don't recommend polishing these cups. This goes way beyond buffing. The finish on the alluminum cups is an 80 grit finish, meaning the tooling marks were hidden with the satin finish. First you will have to use Tripoli to cut through the satin finish and tooling marks. The cups were spun from 040 aluminum, meaning you stand a chance of polishing right through the cups or weakening the wall structure of the cup.
I tried polishing a Ravel chop cup one time and ruined the cup because it to was 040 aluminum. While you can brighten them, I wouldn't recommend trying to get a mirror finish on them. Jake

I did notice that the Ravel cups are quite thin walled and I wondered if a buffing wheel would stand a chance of going through the wall of the cup. I think I'll try brightening them up with some light polishing , but not trying to buff them to a shiny mirror finish. For what they are they're pretty nice . I'll leave 'em alone. |

Todd,
Try Mother's Alum. mag wheel polish on them, this will lift any dirt or oxidation off the cups and put a very nice shine on them as well. If you want to prevent or retard oxidation, try applying a few coats of Flitz to them, but Mother's them first. Jake

I still have my set from Disney Land Main St. Magic shop. They also had a line of chop cups that varied including a Mini that was a 90% match to a Mini Don Alan.
