I've been hired to do some walk around at my College's Caféteria to hype up for another magician (Jason Bishop) coming later that week (Late Nov.). It's my first paid gig and I'm very excited. I'd like to post my routine ideas below so the more experienced magicians can give me advice.
I'm trying to get together 4 routines because it's a small college, and it's possible quite a few people who see me at the first meal will see me at the next (I'm working at two meals). This way I have two routines to perform at each meal. I almost have my first one complete, which I have listed below. I have also listed some other tricks that I would like to use, but don't have any specific order set in mind. Routine 1: Poker Opener - Joshua Jay Invisible Palm - Houchin/David Stone combination *Need closer* Tricks for other routines: Ambitious card Tattoo Joe Clutch Prophet Stigmata Greed JOL Plus Wallet (could be used as AC ending, but I'll also use its other features) This n That (My own version using the K, Q, and Joker) Card in hand Branded M5 Most of the above tricks I know, and some I plan on purchasing. I know others, but the above are the ones that I really enjoy performing. I would especially like to use Greed, but I'll need a way to reset it. I thought I could use the M5 to vanish it back to my body, but that would require sleeves to be rolled down, which I prefer not to do. Any alternatives? Besides that, any ideas which tricks go together? Are there any ones not listed that you recommended for me? Thanks in advance! |

If all your material is from ellsuionist and theory11 why not just use ellusionist and theory 11 routining?
People who work for Theory 11: Do you want a young guy without a stupid gelled haircut or eurotrash jeans for your videos? PM me.

I would suggest doing a few more things other than cards. Otherwise it will appear and a bunch of card tricks and not a magical performance.

I would NOT DO Josh Jay's Poker Opener...
I have found it to fall very flat on deaf eyes/ears unless the people you are using it for are really into playing poker...not that it really has much to do with poker but the guise of "explaining" the different sleights to them I have found is boring to a lay audience. I usually only do that routine during my Crooked Gambeling Demo's that I'm hired to do! DO NOT do Stigmata! Nuff' said! I would also try to mix it up. The Inv. Palm is a good one but I would leave it at that! Do some coin work. If you don't know any sleights, then I would try to aquire a Scotch and Soda set or Hopping Halves, or something so you can do some variety. If it were ME doing your set and I was limited to doing 3 tricks per table, I would do the Invisible Palm, Coins Across or Coins to Glass, and Ring and String. If you don't know any Ring and String stuff, buy "Swing a Ring" which is a gimmicked shoelace and a silver ring. You can cheat and it looks pretty awesome! For future reference, I would suggest going LIGHT on the Ellusionist/T11 stuff and pick up the following BOOKS (not videos/dvds) and become well versed in our craft: Expert Card Technique Modern Coin Magic Tarbell The Royal Road to Card Magic Erdnase That's a good start! You would be shocked at how many of the E/T11 crap is just recycled stuff from those books! Good Luck!

I'd like to make note that I am NOT an E/T11 kid. I've been in magic for over 2 years and have read extensivly on books such as Card College, Royal Road to Card Magic, etc.
I just found that the stuff E and T11 sell tend to get better reactions among the college student age, which is the only age group who will see these tricks. Also, I'd like to get into coin magic, however I'd rather stick with sleights I already know rather than new ones. Also, please explain why you don't recomennd Stigamata. I found it is great when used right before doing something like a tattoo card. I've only had positive reactions with it. And please keep in mind this is for a college Caféteria, not a formal resturant. Things are quite laid back here. P.S. I understand your concern about the Poker Opener. I neglected to mention that I don't use a "Poker" patter. |

WOW!!! 2 years huh...your a seasoned veteren...lol! = ) (tongue in cheek)
I just think Stigmata is a stupid trick even back when Banachek came up with it. I was simply stating taht I thought you should broaden your scope of Magic since the only magic you listed was T11 or E stuff.

I never claimed my 2 years made me a "seasoned veteren [sic]". Don't claim I said something when I didn't.
I did not list only E or T11 stuff. Check the list again. While I respect your opinions on Stigmata, simply labeling it a "stupid trick" is not enough to convince people not to use it. If you want to convince people, please use evidence to support your arguement rather than just calling it "stupid". Either way, I've gotten great reactions with it. Maybe it's not your style, but plently of people enjoy it. It's a shame that I came here for help, and with a very humble attitude, but all I get is bullying by the "veterens [sic]". I thought this was a place to learn and grow, not to elevate one's self above others. |

If all you’re going to do is cards then no routining is necessary. Do your three best card tricks and move along. Be ready to do two more if people really react strongly (maybe they will after all stranger things have happened!). However, no matter how much people beg you to do one more card trick move on. Leave them wanting more.
My goal would be to entertain the folks I interact with. I believe that variety ads spice, interest, and increases entertainment value to an act. My walk-around-table-hopping set doesn’t have but one card trick, the selected-signed-card-to-wallet. It doesn’t get more powerful. Honestly I think that is one too many card tricks (and I love card tricks). I strive for a set of three varied tricks, one using money (coins or bills), one using a novelty item (knives, sponges, shoelace and borrowed ring, chop cup, etc), and one using cards. If I was just sitting at a table and jamming with some folks with a deck of cards I’d probably do a long set of impromptu, no set-up, card tricks but I’d still end up with the signed card to wallet. It can’t be topped and makes for a nice closer. My signed card to wallet requires no gimmicked wallet (yet I own a dozen different gaffed and gimmicked wallets – who needs them?). I’d probably borrow a bill have it signed and then vanish it only to find it in an impossible location (in an inflated balloon that has to be burst adds a ton of interest, takes no pocket space, is easy to do and rocks!). If I did the borrowed signed bill to wherever I’d not do the signed card to wallet. In the audience’s mind it is the same trick. I might tear and restore something (tear up the signed bill, restore it, vanish it, later find it in a balloon or lemon. This is yet another easy sequence). I’d clearly do sponge balls or rabbits especially with young ladies. The reaction far outweighs the skill needed. Whoops, no card tricks there. No difficult tricks either but all that allow your personality to shine through. From your list I’d probably routine a selected and signed, ambitious card to card to wallet (your JOL wallet) routine. That will be a personality piece and lend itself to a ton of spectator/table interaction. Tattoo Joe might be a nice back-up or add on to the above. Force the card that is going to be signed and have the name of the card “tattooed” on your arm and then vanish it and do the ambitious card to card to wallet. But again, you’ve got to do what you know and if this is it then this is what you’re going to do.

As far as diversifying my effects, that is where I'm hoping Greed could come in. Like I mentioned before, I haven't delved into coin magic yet, so I have to rely on less time consuming sleights. |

When working tables, I almost never do card magic for the opener. A short ring and rope routine, coins across with silver dollars, $100 Bill Switch, quick sponge ball routine, pen through bill etc. Sanverted from Carneycopia is a great card effect for tables.

I'm not familiar with most of the effects you mention.
However... Pick four for the early meal and four for the later meal. Three of the four being a 'set' and the fourth as an encore if asked. If some are mentalism or bizarre then make a set of those. The same goes for comedy, gambling and other themes. Just my opinions. Good Luck, |

I'm not bullying you nor am I trying to elevate myself above others. You asked for advice and I gave it to you. You don't like the advice that I gave you so you took what I said as a personal attack when it was not meant to be. I am sorry if you mis-understood my comments.
I said in my last post: >> WOW!!! 2 years huh...your a seasoned veteren...lol! = ) (tongue in cheek) << It was a joke which is why I said TONGUE IN CHEEK! Laugh...it was ment to be taken light heartedly. Since you appear to be a very sensative guy, let me fill ya in about this and many other forums. When you asked for advice...prepare to receive it. It may not be delviered in the way that you would like, but it's there to HELP YOU! I'm not here to stroke your ego. I meant no harm in anything that I said. If you took something I said wrongly, then please accept my apology. I was merely trying to guide an obvious newcomer down the right path to success.

You're in college, you're going to have to jazz it according to spectator reactions. I never have a SET 4 trick or 3 trick routine UNLESS I'm working a private close up show where I have the time to do longer routines, then I have the tricks scripted and posted inside my case. You'll be good if you do 2-3 interesting pick a card tricks and something other than cards such as a chop cup or the SPONGE BUNNIES! I feel that if you have a SET 3 or 4 tricks per table then you're locked into it and it doesn't give you enough opportunity to go with the flow.
You're working a VERY low key gig. If it's a college Caféteria people will be coming, going, and looking for something to do to kill some time. Don't get stressed. Just have a good time and make sure that you are personable. Remember to make the people laugh just as much as you amaze them. |

When I say VERY low key gig, I don't mean anything demeaning. I simply mean it's low stress and casual. I've worked college gigs and they are fantastic!

Tongue-in-cheek:
http://www.answers.com/topic/tongue-in-cheek Meant entirely toung in cheek! LOL!!! This first gig will tell you a great deal. It will validate much of what the experienced old heads (like me - a true dinosaur!) are trying to help you with. You're probably getting over 150 years of experience here right now.

I've gotten some GREAT advice and a few "slaps on the hands" from various members of the Magic Café and still do. I've been doing magic for over 30 years but have just recently (about a year and a half ago) started to actually perform for groups of people rather than just a trick or two for a few friends. The more experienced members here have helped and still do help me with performing a show rather than just doing a trick or two.
So, I for one welcome all of the advice (nice or not so nice) I can get from the more experienced members. Just for the record, I actually need a "slap on the hands" every once in a while. LOL...
It's not the size of the wand that matters, it's the "magic" in it...

You'll do great. Just remember to relax and have fun. Take what you feel is your strongest material and focus more on the people, not the tricks.

Devts,
Congratulations on your first paid gig! There is nothing more exciting than performing/sharing your passion for an audience. Plus you get paid. Just an observation and I could be wrong but you seem to be a little sensitive/defensive. Be prepared for that sensitivity to be tested "BIG TIME". You WILL run into people that will think nothing about telling you that they saw how you did something of make negative comments. ( I'm just sayin!) There will also be those people that will just love what you do. Do get defensive. Enjoy yourself ! Make sure of course that you practice what your going to perform to the best of your ability. Entertainment is the name of the game. You may want to check out this book. http://www.leeasher.com/store/books/handle_hecklers.html Just some good advice for situations you WILL encounter. Hope all goes well and you've received some great advice from guys that have been there done that. David Paul
