I think I heard this from Sammy Smith about when the kids say Rocky is not real:
"Well, he is the realest puppet I've ever seen!"

I usually just keep going with my schtick and they quiet down. I don't really mind if they do know he is a puppet, but I often perform in shopping malls and we do "meet and greets" after the shows.
Most of the kids want to pet Rocky and they still think he is real. I like to move his tail when they pet him. Fitz

I think if your performing technique is right, you won't get this response from the audience.
For a strong performer who can keep control of his audience this will never be a problem, it is not nessecary to imply that he is real real at any stage of the act (it is very much like a magician stating, as he pulls a deck of cards out of his pocket, "I am using an 'ordinary' deck of cards", this immediatley causes spectators to doubt the validity of the statement, as if it was an ordinary deck of cards, why not just say, "I have a deck of cards")! Since, as other people have already stated, if you use David Williamson's technique they will either assume it is real or not. No offence intended but all I can really suggest, is that if you keep getting this respose, try to use something else in your act instead of Rocky Raccoon! Remember that just because one person can perform it well there are also people who can't do it quite so well. (I would include myself in the latter)! Michael A.

I go with this is a REAL Puppet.
Sometimes then go REALLY. I then say, yes. In fact I need to locate Bob, (that is what I call the one I use) He sometimes goes and plays somewhere in the house when I am not looking. I tell stories about my own pets from the past that become the Real Animal Puppets Stories. Bob's stories comes from Gunner my Real Ferret. He went to Ferret Kevin. (Similar to Heaven it is what a young member of the family called Heaven for a while but I digress.) Here Bob, I have some real pretend food. Speaking of food, I pretend to feed Bob, then look at the audience and say Bob's Magic word is Atkins and he has used up all his CARBS FOR THE DAY. Then I recite: Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet eating her curds and whey along came a spider and sat down besider and said you've used up all your carbs for today. Or the Weight Watcher version's last line... You’ve used up all your POINTS for today. The above poem(s) is the type of things I throw in to get the adults into the audience. Harris

I have a Rocky. Actually he belongs to one of my sons. We saw him demonstrated at a "Magic Masters" shop in Las Vegas about 5 years ago and my son REALLY wanted him. I broke down and got it for his birthday. He played with it for a while then he was abandoned and lived in my box of unused magic tricks.
The school my sons attend has an annual holiday craft festival/fundraiser. One of the activities is "pocket man". It’s kind of a human vending machine. An adult wears a coat covered with pockets. The children give pocket man a ticket, and get to reach in a pocket and get a prize. I have volunteered to take a turn being pocket man for the last several years. This year I thought it would be fun to use Rocky while being pocket man. He went over great! I practiced a few of the basic moves for the last several days. The kids all loved him. A number of parents commented on how they thought he was real when they first saw him. When kids said he wasn't real, I used the line, "I know, but don't tell him, it hurts his feelings!" and this always got a great laugh. One child said Rocky bit him and a couple others looked worried at this, but I assured them he doesn't bite hard. The little tiny ones loved petting Rocky and he made it easier for the shy ones to come up to me. I was very pleased with the reactions I got, and it was a great opportunity to practice Rocky for a couple hours with real kids. I still don't have a good hook to bring him into my regular kid show but I can see why performers love Rocky. |

Kids may very well call things out regardless of how strong a performer you are. Part of it may have to do with the fact that most kids have had little or no experience being part of a live audience so they don't know how they are supposed to act. For that matter, neither do many of the adults as evidenced by lack of cell phone etiquette, but that's a whole different discussion.
Kids may yell things like that out because they often have less impulse control than the adults. Admittedly, with some adults it's a REALLY fine line (again, different discussion). In short, they think something, and they say it. Much the same way they say things like, "I know how you did that!" (whether they do or not) or "I've seen that one before!" (whether they have or not.) Addressing it with some of the GREAT lines I've seen posted here is a perfect response. It acknowledges the statement and immediately redirects it and turns it into a non-issue without interrupting the existing energy and flow of the show. The real key (for me) as making it sound like it is the very first time you have ever heard someone say that to you. A good ad lib is well rehearsed.

This thread is a veritable smorgasbord of great Rocky lines and ideas. Thanks everybody!
In my shows, near the beginning of my Rocky routine, it's common for the kids to ask if he's real. I simply say "He thinks he's real" or "He likes to pretend he's real". It's not going to detract from the children's enjoyment of Rocky if they know he's a puppet, so if they state that Rocky is a puppet, I agree and reply "He sure looks real doesn't he?". Don't worry about it, just keep having fun with him! |

MrGreggy,
You seem to be pulling up all the older "Rocky" threads. I am guessing you're a passionate guy about him. |

If you have a routine and do it well and show it for a short time, you will hear very little comments about it not being real. The most comments I get are, "It is real?" I never lie to children, but I do not say is is not real either. I say, "He thinks He's Real. The secret is, keep it moving, keep the routine short and do not let the children get too close. Then you will have little resistance. I also get children always saying, We want to see Rocky Again!!! Do not show it again. It is like showing a trick more than once. You have done such a good job, they are not sure it is real and want to find out. Do not let them. Keep it a mystery. |

I always tell the kids that he is a puppet. Rocky turns his head side to side as if saying "No I'm not". I then repeat that he is only a puppet and Rocky stares at me very annoyed. Throughout my routine I continue to try to prove to the kids he is a puppet and the kids yell at me that he IS real.

If it becomes a problem and continues, then use a quick line from this thread : i.e. He thinks he's real."and quickly move on with your routine. My routine is not long but quick and funny. Once I put him away, I always get kids saying, "Please bring him out again." I do not. It means you did a good job and they are not sure he is a puppet and want to find out. It comes down to this. If you believe he is real and treat him like a real animal. so will your audience. Also, some performers are better at certain things like puppetry then others. If I do a routine that is contantly getting heckling or problems, I will look carefully at how I am doing it and may eliminate it from my show. If it is not working for you, stop using it in your shows. You can't do everything. |

I would assume that David Williamson uses the Rocky Raccoon from Magic Masters, since he used to work there as a demonstrator. I also worked there, but long after David went on to bigger & better venues. The person who trained us both was Dennis Sowers. He's the best Rocky manipulator I've ever seen.
