Hi Homer,
great to have you here. What are your thoughts on exposure on the net, especially the ones on youtube. It really hurts to see many illusions revealed. It's a growing virus that affect us all. Many say that the performance is more important and will overshadow the secret but without the secret there is no magic. Do you, David and Chris try to do anything about it? Best Regards, Silvio

Hi Silvio,
I have a response your concerns somewhere else in this section... Someone asking about the masked magician. Let me know if it answers your thoughts! Homer |

I think all that magic exposure really hits the guy who performs tricks right out of the box. I doesn't affect the Copperfield show and it doesn't really affect any of the other magic acts here in Vegas. The reason is most of the acts here put a lot of time and effort to make their magic unique and entertaining. If Penn and Teller use an Illlusion "base" to vanish a person, even people that have seen it exposed on television won't care or even notice because they are being thoroughly entertained. Even if someone has seen a cut and restored rope routine exposed on tv, they will still be entertained and very badly fooled by Mac King's rope routine because he spent the time and effort to make it unique. Are your feelings about the masked magician the same? Also, was the masked magician the reason the TV shows stopped? It seemed right after that we didn't have any more TV specials, or was it the networks who did not want to carry them? Last question, do you go up to the coin convention (Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic) in Batavia, ny?

I have not put much thought on the masked magician. we are just too busy working on the future.
Tv specials probably died out because there were too many too fast and they all wanted to look like our tv specials - which is a look David has been pioneering since for 20 years. Magician's think its commonplace to end a special with people surrounding giant vanishing objects, or to do romantic vignettes with stage props that look like everyday objects - so they do it on TV. They are all years behind. Reality TV took over and no one cared about fancy lights and visual copies of our shows over the years. It wasn't until David Blaine did the exact opposite, and showed up with handheld cameras with people on the street that people noticed magic on tv again. People were so sick of the mass produced specials and they received Blaine very well. Haven't been to Fechters, but would love to someday. I have to practice first. Homer |

Homer,
I couldn't find the post about the Masked Magician. So did you ever think about doing something about the youtube exposure or any exoposure on the www.? Or is that a subject David Copperfield Disappearing Inc. does not care much about. I can only say that if I would be in a power position like you I woulkd definatively try to stop the exposure of our trade secrets. Best, Silvio

I think Homer answered that one well.
Fechters is more than just Coins ....pretty much all of Close-up is cevered there. I think the point made was that David and other pros out there working are so entertaining that the exposure doesn't matter. If you really think about it ...exposure to magic has always been there through books and now videos you just need to seek it out so why worry so much about it. Mike |
