I am just an average Joe… and I would have loved to have met Jimmy Grippo or Edward Thorpe but never imagined it was possible. It kills me to find out now that such exclusive associations were actually always available to me, or anyone for that matter, if only we just hung out with the "right people". Smile

When you do meet these people you find they are just average Joes and I have yet to meet one who has two heads.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I met Jimmy Grippo when I was in my 20s (I started doing magic at 11 years old) ..... so, that was about 30 years ago in Las Vegas. I went to the magicians hang out on Wednesday night and he was there. Then after doing sleight of hand for hours we went to a VERY late dinner/breakfast with a bunch of guys until about 6:00 AM. When we came out of the resturant I remember seeing the sun after an all night session with a handful of card guys.

As far as Ed Thorp is concerned. I met him this past Feb 2008 at a conference for casino executives and surveillance officers in Las Vegas. It turns out we had a mutual friend, Russel Barnhart (who died a couple of years ago). This was 30+ years after I started counting cards during the late 1970s and early-mid 1980s.

I spent my last 2 years in college developing a card counting system based upon some of the ideas in Beat the Dealer from 1976-1978. My system was a 3-level card counting system and I still have some of my old computer runs in the attic as proof that I developed the system. I was a computer science, chemistry and physics major in college ... combining this expertize with magic served be well in life ;-)

When you meet these guys, my best advise is to do some of your best material and they all seem to be VERY friendly if you know what you are talking about and are knowledgeable. They will clam up around curiosity seekers.

BOTTOM LINE: They are mostly all down to earth and friendly Smile
