Hello!
quite new to coin magic and I'm thinking about getting either Ammar's introduction or David Stone's dvds, which of them would you recommend? I'm looking for a dvd which teaches you some sleights as well as some routines so I can go out and perform some coin magic before I move on. |

I think if you are just starting out, Ammars dvd's are the best bet. You'll learn the basic sleights, and good solid coin effects to go with them. Michael has a knack for delivering good effects on his DVD's if you ask me.
However after you feel more comfortable, I think you should definitely take a look at Stones work. His coin magic is among some of the most magical looking stuff in my opinion. Also don't neglect the books, regardless of what other people think, Bobos book is still the best coin book if you ask me. There's always something new to discover in it. At least that has been my experience. Just my two cents. Some of the more hardcore coin men around here, would probably have some other things to say. All the Best, Josh |

If you want to abandon coin magic in frustration, by all means just begin with "Modern Coin Magic" book. If you want to actually UNDERSTAND technique and psychology and get a solid foundations of the very basic then try "The Complete Introduction to Coin Magic" by Michael Ammar. After that you can move to David Roth and David Stone Coin Magic DVDs. Do get the Bobo bookbut for god's sake don't use it as your ONLY tool, unless you are on a VERY tight budget. AS you progress your way in coin magic you will refer to this book again and again. IT should not be missed.

Bobo's book is a must have, you will go back to it time and time again.
I suggest David Roth's Coin magic made easy start with the first one and work your way up. While he teaches you everything you need to know to get started you'll also get some great routines you can use to get you confidents up while you practice through the DVD's But really it all depends on what you want to do. Just go get something that appeals to you and start practicing. Good Luck and remember have fun. Tim

I just started into coin magic a couple weeks ago and finding the Bobo book paired up with Ben Salinas 4 DVD set that complements the Bobo book to be a very good pair. Ben does a great job explaining the slights and is a member of this forum.

Bobo's has been with me for decades and I've had several of the intro dvds, all good but for me I thought Ammar's Intro to Coin Magic dvd is quite a package. Just 1 dvd but packed with all you need to learn and do this stuff. Your creativity will be sparked by it.
And I also agree with my man DynaMike here about the Modern Coin Magic 4-dvd set, it's a great acompaniment to the famous book. As a matter of fact, Magi Ben Salinas has a great offer on it going on right now, 50% off the set. You can't beat it. It's about the price of what one dvd goes for except you get 4 dvd's chock full of great coin magic, just like the Bobo book it's a great deal. And welcome to all you newbies. Here's Ben's original post about the offer: Quote: On 2008-08-28 19:52, BenSalinas wrote: I've received so many wonderful comment on my Modern Coin Magic DVD set from the Café coin magicians that I'd like to give something back. The Modern Coin Magic 4-DVD set normally sells for around $70-$80. It's the perfect companion to J.B. Bobo's classic book. Now you can SEE what you've been missing for all these years. And it's perfect for the beginner. I'm offering a limited number of my personal stock of these 4-DVD sets at just $35 for Café members. Here's the link to order your set today. http://www.salinasmagic.com/moderncoin.html The discount is applied when you Add to Cart. Thank you for all your support! Ben S

I bought the Bobo book from a local magic store and the DVD set directly from Ben. From a beginners perspective, being able to purchase both the Bobo book and the DVD set that provides a visual reference to about 98% of the book content for under $50 is a fantastic deal. And that includes shipping

I think it's about the best $8 bucks or so you can spend on coin magic.
You won't get more for the price in anything else you purchase relative to coin magic. If you're on a tight budget there's nothing you can buy any better than that book for what you get in it and how long it lasts in your journey. It's more than worth it, buy it!

You can learn from Bobo's , though it is far from the easiest one to learn from. David Roth's text is by far easier for a beginner. Still, back when there wasn't a whole lot else to learn from, most of us learned from Bobo's

The finest book on coin magic I've ever read is:
Coin Magic by Richard Kaufman. Perhaps this is the book some are referring to as David Roth's text. There is a second 'big' coin book Kaufman wrote. That is entitled, David Roth's Expert Coin Magic. It too is a fine book. It is not intended for beginners. Both books are in print. Get the first one. I can still do High Flying Winged Silver out of that book. I still do a copper/silver routine I worked up from it, as well. I took a copy of Coin Magic to sea with me on four different submarines. It is the real coin man's bible. I think it is on par, in it's field, with Expert Card Technique! Nothing else compares. Nothing. Bobo was certainly important when written and has a wealth of material. The writing in Bobo is not excellent and the illustrations are sparse, at best. The illustrations, solid writing and great material from a bevy of coin stars make Kaufman's book seminal beyond measure. Everything you need is in there to start a wonderful journey. I loved the Bobo book when Earl Nelson sold me a copy, circa . . . 1969??? I still have that copy. It is available very inexpensively, as a Dover softbound book. You can certainly become a competent coin magician with that material. The stuff in there from Milton Kort is wonderful. It is much, much harder to learn from. If you must get coin DVDs to learn from. Realize you're getting far, far less information for your magic dollar. I would get Sankey's coin magic video "Revolutionary Coin Magic" to start with. His coin work is excellent if not superlative and he has some excellent tips on standard coin sleights. It is two and a half hours long, I might add. It could be the best deal in coin magic videos for a beginner out there. I realize many here will disagree with me. I mean no disrespect to the memory of J.B. Bobo, I love his book. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Salinas' work on DVD. I have not seen his product! |

Frido89, you did mention that you were on a "tight budget." This is for comparison purposes in better weighing pros & cons as to what's what.
Kaufman Coin Magic: $40-$50 Roth Expert Coin Magic: $60-$70 Bobo's New Modern Coin Magic: $6-$10 Make no mistake, you've gotten some good advice from differing perspectives above and I would say all these books belong on your magic library shelf but if you're looking for the most for the least, well you do the math. It should be pretty clear.
