See my complete post under The Fellowship of Christian Magicians, "The Good News" section for all the information you need. I purchased at Lowe's on 9-29-08 a wheeled black "dorm cart", which is a 45 inch high 12 by 12 storage tower with an open back, for the amazingly low sale price of $14.99. It is loaded with pockets and shelves. It is perfect for the restaurant performer that needs access to multiple props or for the part-time kids show performer such as myself. Not portable or strong enough for the full time performer, but plenty adequate for my use as an amateur magician. Check it out if you are driving by a Lowe's, is well worth it even if you use it only for storage of your props in your magic room.

This magician's "table" tower may also be available at Target. Sells anywhere between $14.99 at sale at Lowe's to $49. For a picture, go to Amazon.com, go to the home and garden section. Then in the search box put in Richards Homewares. The black dorm cart is #137, on page 6.

MagicBus, Do you have a link to the wheeled black "dorm cart you are referring to? I went to Lowe's website and could not find this doing a search under either "wheeled black dorm cart" or "dorm cart". Thaks for any info.

Yep, go to amazon.com, type in the words "Home and Garden" in the search box. Click on Go. Then once in that section, type in "Richards Homewares" in the search box, click on Go. The black tower unit is on page 6 of this section, I think it is number 139 or something. Click on the "larger view"- a nice picture of this black tower storage cart will appear. I paid $14.99 for it at Lowe's on sale on 9-30, Target may also have it. Sells anywhere up to $49.99, amazon has it for $39 or so. Once I assembled the unit, I then made the hanging black bags/side bags non-mobile by attaching it to the steel frame using 2 inch (one inch capacity) LARGE black binder clips sold at any office supply store such as Office Max or Office Depot. This prevents the "bags" or shelves in the unit from sagging downward when I am loading it face up into the back seat of my Chevrolet Cavalier. I am really excited about this little cart, two of them fit tightly in the back seat of my car. They easily hold everything I need to do a complete preschool children's show I like to specialize in, and every trick now has its own "compartment", wow! Will take me now less than 5 minutes to set up, and the side bag holds my ipod player that I can operate with my remote. It is very lite. Only problem with it is the back is open (so I may drape it with a black Halloween cape before the show begins) and it is not sturdy enough or completely secure enough for a professional performer who has to have his baggage "handled", transported or roughly moved around. As for me, I am going to carefully transfer both these cart units from my car directly onto my small flat rolling cart (available from Office Depot)- and roll it right into the classroom. I will then take the two cart towers off my flat pull cart, load my live rabbit into the appearing Jumbo Rabbit Die Box I use, and be ready to go!Again, if you can find this entire cart on sale like I did, it can't be beat, even if just to store your magic in at home. The world's most inexpensive rolling magic table! It literally has at least 20 little storage pockets or shelves per unit.

Here is a direct link to the organizer mentioned above.
http://www.amazon.com/Multipurpose-Stora......sr=1-141 For the price this organizer can be useful as a table...but it does need some modifications. I can see how you would transport your props to the show in this. But for the low cost...I think it can be useful. Rich B. |

My question is and please excuse my ignorance, how would you carry it around without your props falling out? How many times do I have to walk far from my car to do a show. Or is this a table that you open up and then put your props in.
Thanks |

My post above has a typo. It should have read" I CAN"T see how you would transport your props to the show in this. So I have the sane questions as yourself. Rich B. |

I believe you still need a bag to carry your props, and then place them into the various compartments during set-up.

Hi. I was playing around with my two Richards Homewares "black dorm carts" last night, I found that I could get ALL my props for my children's show into them. Not bad for $29.98 plus tax! A pleasant surprise. In the two large side bags I placed my large ipod player with speakers and my excellent "Wolf Run Wolf" trick which is super for the age 3-10 kids groups I perform for. "Wolf" is an oversized prop, and it just barely fit into the side bag. The remote works through the mesh part of the side bag for my speaker system, so I do not even have to remove the ipod player from the stand for shows.
I then placed both towers on my little flat rolling metal cart I bought from Office Depot, and although both stands don't quite fit on it squarely, they were easily secured to the cart by thin long bungie cord. On top on the towers goes my rabbit cage for transport from car to classroom. So, my objective was met, my entire act can be transported from car to classroom in one easy trip. AND, each trick now has its own little storage place in one of the two stands, so it will make set up a breeze. No more sorting from one storage suitcase or footlocker and putting the magic into another stand or on a folding table (which all has to be put away after the show). Not much to do now except make sure the tricks are upright and ready to go, and load my rabbit into my jumbo appearing rabbit die box that I use. This large die box barely too fits neatly into one of the tower compartments (about the size of a large boot/shoe box). My large wooden strat-o-spheres (I use wooden fruit for this effect) just barely fit one of the compartments also. I secured the "bags" to the steel cart frames using 2 inch large binder clips, that is so I can lay both stands FACE UP in the back seat of my car- so the props do fall out of the stands during driving. After I place the stands on the cart (open sides facing each other), I intend to carefully pull the loaded flat cart slowly to the classroom so the props do not all fall out of my two towers. My black velvet Halloween capes also completely wrap around each tower, which also to help secure and hide the magic inside. Again, this is flimsy, and not secure if you do a lot of shows and/or heavy duty traveling. But for me, its perfect, my children's act is basically now 95% ready to go, just by wheeling my stands into the room. And I have a lot of stuff! My total investment in both these stands purchased on sale from Lowe's (in the aisle with the large plastic housewares storage containers) with the metal clips was less than $35 including tax. The stand tops will also act as my performing surfaces, along with my "Instastand" (portable computer laptop stand purchased from SkyMall) which also fits in one of the towers easily. Amazing! So if you can carefully transport your act from car to performance area without too much bumping around and not straight uphill, these simple storage stands might be something to consider. Again, not bad for the price for sure. I can't wait to use them, won't be using now my old wooden (but far more bulky) large/traditional stands. Maybe this stystem can work for you do, particularly if an amateur hobbyist without tons of equipment like myself. |

Well, I just bought one. I haven't opened the box yet but I can see that with some minor modifications it may work out nicely for my shows. My shows are big but like most of us I like to be able to set up and break down quickly and travel as lightly as possible with one trip from my vehicle to the performance area. I will assemble it tonight and see how it works out. If it does I will go back and buy a couple more. I will let you know how it works out.
Magicbus, what is this "Instastand" you mentioned earlier? Wally

Can you make a cloth and wrap round the table and velcro it in place like a tube to prevent the stuff from falling off?
Just a thought.

Hi, let me know what you think. I enjoyed practicing yesterday with my two "tower" cart stands from Richards Homewares that I purchased from Lowe's on sale for $14.99 each, and they just worked out great. They almost look magical. These will cut down my set up and take down time considerably. Just have to be careful when transporting them from car to classroom that that they stay level on my rolling flat cart. With my "Instastand", I now have three small performing surfaces to work off of. The "Instastand" holds the Duane Laflin/Lock Family Magic "Dump Box", perfect for my sponge ball and silk magic. The rolling tower cart table top surface is high enough that I don't have to worry now about any child looking down into a prop such as the Strat-O-Spheres to expose the trick (I use a wooden one, use plastic fruit and not balls, purchased from Ron Conley in N. Mrytle Beach). The appearing fruit basket I use is actually a large dove pan that also fits nicely on the top shelf of one of the tower units. For information on the pricey "Instastand", which is actually a portable stand designed to hold laptop computers, go to "The Fellowship of Christian Magicians" heading of The Magic Café, then click on "The Good News." Then click on the topic "Super Small Side Table." Not a very large performing surface, you would have to attach another board or plastic sheet to it to make it larger. But this extemely compact computer stand holds my "dump boxes" nicely, also which easily fold up for putting back into the cart tower. The large side pockets, which come with velco attachments, hold my oversized items such as my ipod stereo system. I still think for $14.99, it can't be beat, and is perfect for a restaurant performer who wants to do more than cards and out of the pocket effects. Again, it is not rugged by any means, but for my purposes, after securing the cart table to the frame together using 2 inch large binder clips (I really think you need to do this if you are going to transport the unit loaded with magic like I plan to, otherwise it would shift all over the place). Hope you can use it.

I got a cell phone call from full time pro magician Alan Kazam this morning, he uses this Richards Homewares "cart" now in his table hopping family restaurant work. Said it works out terrific! Cool!

In more specific response to the above inquiry, the "insTand" (which I store in my larger tower cart for travel) I purchased through http://www.SkyMall.com, where it is marketed as "Quickstand Plus." Be sure to get the "Plus" version as it is taller/goes higher. It is extremely stable, the "sticky" rubber no-slip tabletop portion is about 13 inches by about 11 inches wide. The black legs weigh only 22 ounces. Just perfect to put large cards on, silks, the Laflin "dump box", other not too heavy items. The vendor is Lizell out on Landsale, PA (800-718-8882), distributed through Carliss Industries, Inc. Pompano Beach, FL (1-877-instand). See http://www.instand.com. So if you are looking for a light, subcompact side table that will fit easily into your present larger magic table for travel, this is a good one. They also make a CR5 model, but that is much heavier duty version and weighs in at 8 pounds as the base is crome plated steel.
