Hey everyone, quick question. I have Jeff Sheridan's Close-up Miracles Vol 2, and he talks about one hand fanning, but he doesn't really go into the detail I would like. He just says 'snapping motion'...
I can one hand fan fine, but Sheridan's looks so elegant.any advice to make it more perfect, would be appreciated

Thanks

All I can say, is that if yours looks 'fine' at the moment, then 'elegance' will follow naturally somewhat later.
It is all down to practice. You could get Vol.2 of his 'Genius at Work', which is his card manipulation dvd, but it may not help any more than what you have now.
Good luck - come back in a few years and I bet you will be telling us that your fan is just as good as Jeff Sheridan's Smile

I know Jeff and I have seen his fans close up ...His hands are big and so are his fans... Huge ! He has put a lot of time in his card work ...His advice is always to out many years of practice in before performance.

Well, it's all fine and good to say "practice years!" but he needs a place to learn the proper technique.

if you want the BEST fans out there check out http://www.flourishman.com and get the encyclopedia of flourishes, or XB DVD which has a video fanning clinic.

I am a fanatical fan fan so trust me on this one Smile

Just keep fanning the cards over and over again until you can fan like Jeff. It is the practice that will allow you to get the correct grip in the correct position.

Trashman makes a very good point. One can practice for years and still never get it right if one is learning improper technique. I think you need to learn and study the effect the right way and then practice and rehearse to refine he move and get it feeling comfortable for you. A lot of manipulative moves also just take a while for your hands to get used to them. The positions we place them in are often times not natural and the hands are simply not used to being that way. This is where practice can come into play by allowing the muscles of the hands to relax and get used to the moves.

Saqib did say he could do a 'one hand fan fine' - so he is happy up to a point.
I think what he shouldn't do is fret or panic about the fact that he is not as elegant as Jeff Sheridan (nor am I for that matter - watch my video on the website (the manip one, that is!)). Saqib is obviously a thinking performer from a presentation point of view, and that is a major plus.

I would suggest he just gets on with his magic, enjoys it and 'pefects' the aspects he is worried about over time - because that is what it will take, time, no matter what dvd's he buys, and there are a lot out there.

Have good times with your magic, Saqib.

All our hands are different and because of that the positions for certain fans will differ from each person. You have to find THAT position for yourself by working on the fans. No DVDs or books can tell you what "your position" is.

That is correct. You will learn what feels better for you and what works better as time goes on. the more you do it, the moe your hands start to adapt to the moves you are working on. It starts to become second nature and you may see the fans becoming better. Also take in consideration the cards you use will also effect how the fans come out. Old cards will not fan nearly as well as nice clean ones.

I do agree with Kyle on the type of cards used too.

I think it is a combo of practicing and getting used to the moves but also trying out different cards. All cards are different and what works for me may not work for you. You need to figure out what cards work best in your own hands. So try that out as well.

Thanks for the comments. I do have 'Jeff Sheridan Genius at Work', 'XB', 'Encyclopedia of Flourishes', and well a lot of other stuff. The way I started doing my fan recently was the way that Rocco does his as explained in his IMS video, "With da thumb and da pinkee..." and those are pretty nice fans, but when I saw Sheridan's make a very 'springy' snap fan, I was rocked..especially from back-palm. I'll probably just keep working on it and I watch tv etc; btw I use bike's for practice. Makes my hands strong Smile

I can't say without first seeing your stuff. A video link of you performing fans would help.
