I have developed a computer card trick and was wondering if anyone has seen it elsewhere. I don't have the hubris to assume that just because I thought of it myself that I'm the only one who has thought of it. I'd appreciate hearing if anyone has seen this done before.
Here's the effect. The spectator and the magician are in front of the computer. The spectator is asked to name any card. This is done without a deck and the spectator is free to name any card that comes to mind. The magician then claims that he has the ability to mentally connect with any computer. He opens up a simple website (which I developed) with a line of text, YES and NO buttons and the picture of a blank/white card. The text reads, "Are you thinking of the card?". The magician then concentrates and clicks the "Yes" button. The card on the screen changes from solid white to the color of the card chosen by the spectator and the text changes to "I'm getting a picture of a [red/black] card. Is that correct?" (The prediction of red or black is always correct) The magician clicks the "Yes" button and the card on the screen changes showing a suit of the card chosen by the spectator and the text reads "It appears you are thinking of a [heart/spade/club/diamond]. Am I right?". The magician once again clicks the "Yes" button. (the prediction of the suit is always correct) Finally, the screen changes showing the exact card chosen by the spectator with the text reading. "The image is crystal clear. You were thinking of the [2 of Spades]" (or whatever the actual card was) This only works for the magician. If the spectator tries it the screen will come back reading, "You're mind is too weak for me to read right now." Has anyone seen this or can I actually call this "my creation".

Something very similar was published in MAGIC magazine not too long ago.
I personally think that just the involvement of the PC takes away the magic. Most laymen will view it as a "computer thingy" or those that know PCs well will see it as "oh he clicks an area of the buttons to trigger the outcome" or something similar...

Thanks for the reply. I should have known that there is no such thing as an original thought.
But as the old saying goes. If you know five ways to do a trick but have only one presentation, to the spectator you have only one trick. But if you know one trick and five ways to present it you have five tricks. Computers are one of the few "new" additions to the magic arsenal. And just another way to do the one ahead method. I've done this routine anywhere a computer can be found and it mystifies every time. Yes...the spectators often accuse me of having some special kind of wireless thing going on. But as long as they are way off in their guesswork I'm doing okay. In my experience, the tech savy kids of today are excited about these kinds of computer, iPod, and cell phone manipulations. Of course I wouldn't call these illusions and they would not work well in a stage/parlour show. If anyone is interested, the layout I wrote (without having read any articles, BTW) http://www.thinkdistinct.com/PsychicComputer, but of course it won't work without knowing the trick.

The website said RSL Error 1 of 1 and then said Error #2032.

I was working on a site with a similar principle, but I thought the magician being in control of the mouse was suspicious, so I opted for a different approach. You never touch the computer or mouse, can be repeated, and you don't have to reload the page. I posted it a while back here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=30&10 Enjoy and tell me what you think Jason

Dave, I would suggest you make it portable (it is handier to carry a mobile/iPod etc than a PC). It would be even better if you could show it on the spectators mobile (ie a webpage with the trick somewhere (web-page is naturally connected to your mind-image mega radar tranceiver) - though the user will likely bookmark it and try it out on a later date, so think about how you gain access to the real works without touching the mobile)

Magic still shows up on television which, like this computer theory, could easily be written off as all camera tricks by viewers (which in some cases it is,but who really cares...dont we always say its the effect and not the method that counts?) but networks still broadcast magic on television. Let's not limit the way we present magic. I've incorporated less sophisticated tricks on my computer to great results and countless co-workers have come to me asking how the heck the computer knew which card they were thinking of after a demonstration of the princess card trick via a computer screen. We need to face facts...audiences don't believe that "magic" is really the workings behind a coin disappearing or a person being cut in half. More likely than not an average person will try to come up with some logical way of the tricks working. If the person was entertained before that process kicks in, we have done our job. |

Im not saying it doesn't have its place as an effect... It is just my opinion that when you add something of technology such as a PC into the mix, that the average layperson see it no longer as magic, and more of a "something computerized that they do not understand"...
Its just like the electronic colored light bulb monte effect - the average joe just thinks its "some type of electric switch" controlling it. Its much like using a special graphic designed card deck - people no longer see the deck as a normal deck of bikes - its one of those "trick decks that magicans use..." just my opinion...
