So, every now and then (less often than I should) I go over to the new arrivals and write a few welcome posts. Most of these threads last five to ten posts or so.
UNLESS it's a girl. Should a female magician arrive, the thread can go a dozen pages with all the slobbering at the mouth testosterone filled monsters dying to show the poor woman their topits. Why is that? |

Because men are scum.
And a lot of magicians are eternal optimists, I guess.

Yeah, but it's not like all these old magicians have a CHANCE or something.
Here's a typical thread: "Hello, my name is Julie, I am 15 years old and I just joined the Café because I learned the 21 card trick and I want to learn more!" Response 1: Hello Julie! Welcome to the Café! I am looking forward to hearing about your experiences and wisdom. Thanks for joining! Response 2: Hello Julie! Welcome to the Café! I am certain that you will make an incredible contribution to the discussion here. Response 3: Hello Julie! Welcome to the Café! It is RARE that someone with such promise shows up here. In fact, I can honestly say that the Café has been waiting since its inception for a person of your wisdom, interest, and...dare I say it?...LOVE of magic. Then there are forty or fifty more responses--from dudes who otherwise NEVER STEP FOOT in the welcome forum. It's like sharks smelling blood.... From a PM: "Hey...there's a fifteen year-old girl who just joined the Café! WHOA and WHOOPIE! Think I've got a chance? Do you think my sponge bunny routine is good enough?" I think this thread is going to be deleted, so get your laughs while you can. (But it shouldn't be deleted: I'm not making fun of Julie; I'm making fun of...uh...ME!) |

This is web-wide, there are more really lame boys who never can meet a real girl than you would (Hopefully) find in any one place (Other than Star Trek conventions). You have discovered why real girls are rare occurances. Great discovery; Give this man an internetz!

Hello Stone, have one on me. Funny you would bring up the subject of young ladies in the Magic Café’.
Here is an interesting thread that goes to show how some “magicians” can be real “********* when a young lady, sincerely interested in magic, visits the forum. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&start=0 You see the “egos” really coming into play to the point they are arguing over what road this young lady should take in learning magic. Typical “trolls”. There is also some good encouraging advice, and then one jerk decides to accuse the girl of being a male and demands she prove she is a girl. .Then “others” suddenly begin making derogatory comments, accepting this guys evaluation as gospel. There were a few, including myself who came to her defense, and although she did not have to prove a thing, she put up two (2) videos, one of her doing a “memory deck”, and another of her doing an old card effect. The apologies came right and left. I think the point is that some men really do not know how to act around young ladies and regress to when they were about 8 years old and want “show off”. I say treat her like anyone else. If she is asking for help and guidance, give to her. |

Women magicians are unique, and that automatically garners attention. I've read a few articles over the years that say we should foster their interest, and I think some people are doing that. Others posters have self-esteem issues and only feel confident "talking" to women behind a screen name, so they take the opportunity. Then, there are certain folks who think they're clever and have nothing better to do than embarrass themselves and make inappropriate comments.
BTW, if you ever see anything egregious, report the post and someone will take care of it.

Guys are constantly like dogs in heat.
It don't matter how they are, the imagination is a terrible thing to waste. Some guys would simply like to see more ladies in magic and try to help. Honest! |

I agree with you about women being unique in magic. I pointed this out in one of my posts in the aforementioned thread. I personally feel very strong about this issue as one of my best friends was the first woman to be accepted into the all male S.A.M. at the time. She was “accidentally” approved because her name was similar to a male name, and once she was accepted, it opened the doors for other women. |

Michael,
Did you notice that the lead offender (and chronic ***** stirrer) never did revisit that thread nor did he apologize? I haven't heard from Jewels in a week or so, hopefully just due to school over load! Mick |

My nephews friend, a guy, has (Had?) a myspace account pretending to be a woman. He told me that he did it to get people to talk to him.
My myspace account had lots of interest, but only with the porn bots...

While the thrust of this thread generally true, I don't think it's true of the 'Julianna' thread.
MickeyPainless mentioned his wife - and Jaz mentioned his Grandkids - they sure weren't trying to pick her up. In fact most of the guys who were helping her out I've noticed help anyone who asks. In Julianna's case the help was probably more sustained because she's such a nice girl. In fact the doubt probably snuck in because she's such a nice girl - a real change from the cynical little know it alls we generally see busily biting the hand feeding them. And kudos to the guys who didn't hesitate to apologise. Destiny ..................... My favourite post of the thread was the guy telling her she should move to mentalism - trying to lure her from the safety of card tricks to swimming with sharks. |

Well, let's just say they don't give the impression of having been in the "it" crowd in high school. A random sampling of magicians generally doesn't bring the words "ladies men" to mind. The anonymity of the internet makes flirting and attention-giving a little easier for people who may be a little social awkward in real life. |

I have to admit I am actually a beautiful, large breasted, 18 year old blonde girl masquerading as an aging transvestite to lure men who don't think they should aim too high.
