Hi all,
New to the site but not to forums as I own and run two myself although they have nothing to do with magic. I'm 61 and have been away from magic for some time now. I'm from Chicago and I’m sure anyone in the Chicago area knows of Magic Inc. Years ago I used to make gaffed cards called; "GAFFED CARDS by PHIL HERDA". Hence, the username “gaffed”! Just thought it somewhat apropos at the time I registered! I made everything from cigarette through card, shimmed cards, shaved decks, Elmsley decks, a special trick involving large Bicycle ESP cards that I specially made for a magician in South Africa as I remember with a promise only to make them for him, etc. You name it…I more than likely made it for someone. I'm sure you get the idea. Most everything I made was on a made to order basis. I've made cards for magicians all over the world at one time or another but I slowly gave it up and sold all of my equipment. Had a cutter for making shaved decks, and a corner cutter...things you can't simply go out and buy! They were all specially made for me by my brother who was a tool and die whiz and things that you simply can't put a price on although I managed to do so when I sold everything! I did most of my business by word of mouth by the magicians that came into Magic Inc. and also had a sign up there with my business cards. I have not been there since a few years before Jay Marshall, the owner and a well known magician, passed away. Jay was a really great guy and one who will be sorely missed. It was a great gathering place and one which Eugene Burger and Max Maven were regular visitors and I very much enjoyed conversing with them. I remember the first time I had met Phil Goldstein(Max Maven) back about 1989 or 90 as I didn’t recognize him without his eye makeup and slick pulled back hair although he was still dressed in, yep…. you guessed it…all black! As I said, I’ve not been there for sometime but I imagine that they all still gather there especially Eugene as he lives in Chicago. I’ll definitely have to stop in again for ‘ol time’s sake! I just happened upon David Blaine’s last T.V. show at the local pub awhile back. I don’t go out of my way to watch him as I think his specials are absurd and beyond ridiculous albeit I will give him credit for his extremely good talent with close up magic even though he has the personality and stage presence of a dead earthworm but, that’s just my opinion. It somewhat perked up my interest in magic and upon returning home I began pulling down dusty boxes and boxes of collected magic tricks and going through them. God Almighty, I’ve collected quite a lot and would love to get rid of some including some of the books and VHS tapes that I’ve acquired throughout the years. If someone wishes to drop me a PM perhaps I can tell you what I have available. If so….not yet as I still have to gather them and make a list. But, my purpose in joining here was not to sell anything but to see what’s going on now days in the magic field and perhaps start performing a few tricks here and there just for fun for the locals where I tip a few beers each evening since I retired a few years ago. The first one I resurrected from the dust was Peter Crush’s UNI-KEY which was made, or was made, by Mark Leveridge. I always had a lot of fun with that trick and besides, it’s easy to perform and is quite visual. Well, then again what good magic trick isn’t! Perhaps I’ll get into how I handle it on another thread as I have to do some research as to how I do the last effect which at the same time quite nicely and conveniently gets rid of the gaffed key as I want to give proper credit to the magician from whom I got the idea. Just a shame that it’s not made anymore. It seems rather odd now that I stay away from card tricks seeing that I used to make gaffed cards but I’ve got a wee bit of arthritis in my hand and I’m not at all too proficient in handling them now. Oh crap…. If truth be known, I never was! Great to be here and looking forward to the experience. Hmm…I notice there is no text editor or preview option on this site! ! Don’t believe I’ve ever ran across one that didn’t! I’ll survive….I know a bit of BB coding at least. I just hate hitting submit before I preview as that is when I notice all the misspelling and grammatical errors! ~gaffed~

Welcome Phil.
It seems that Blaine has inspired newbies and re-inspired a lot of magi. Seeing him do tricks that most old timers (I'm 56) did years ago was a revelation that those tricks still go over well. There is a topic about spell checking here: spellcheck |

Thanks for the welcome Jazz.
Long story and perhaps I'll post my experience about another magic site that I inadvertently logged onto. Suffice to say it all seemed to be kids; perhaps 12 to 19 or so, not really all that sure but after a few days I just had to leave! Mind you, I have no problems with young people as for a short period of time I gave lessons to them albeit it was just beginner stuff to get them on their way. It seems as though these kids think that the only magicians on the face of the earth are David Blaine and some guy by the name of Crap Angel...no wait, I think it's Criss Angel...sorry, my mistake. Oops, hope I didn't step on any Criss Angel fans here! If so I apologize. To tell you the truth I've never seen the kid! Even these kids on this particular site talk about what he does with camera angles and such but yet follow him like the Messiah of magicians! Go figure! I also stated my opinion as to how these young people simply watch You Tube videos and then consider themselves as "magicians"! As for spelling I was only joking as I have spell check on my browser as I abhor misspelled words and poor grammar. Again, all I could see on that site was; "Wow, did you cee that guy video cuz it reely got me fulled!" "If I can lern that trik I could reely kik ass"! Sure you get the idea. Anyway, I'm going on a tad long here and time to feed myself and my parrot. The other half went out to eat as the kitchen drain backed up and smells as tad rank here! No worry....I'll have it fixed by the time she gets back. I hope! Later....... ~gaff~

Thanks Spellbinder, either one will suffice but, I believe there is already someone here by the name of "gaff". That is what I chose first but it seems to have been taken.
As long as you don't preface it with Mrs. I'm OK! ~gaff~

Hi Justin and thanks for the welcome.
Sorry for my somewhat ignorance here but I don't quite get the connection between, Jay Marshall, Max Maven and Eugene Burger as to the links you gave? They all seem to be the same and simply lead me to what I suppose is the "MySpace" homepage! Truth be known I've never been there until now and I'm a tad confused but then again, that's about my normal state of mind! ~gaffed~

Well Justin the last link came up with the picture.
Which one is David Blaine? As for the other pictures it would seem as though I would have to log on and become a member of MySpace to view them which is something I'd rather not do. Log on as a member that is! The pictures I would like to see but for now I'm afraid that's not possible. Thanks again! ~gaffed~

Whoops...sorry about that, I had my privacy set and photos could only be viewed by friends.
I changed it and now you should be able to see the links. PS, if you like NYC and Central Park, click on my bicycle link in my signiture, then go to my pictures, you'll see albums with NYC views. |

Ah...now that's better!
How long ago was the picture of Jay Marshall taken? As mentioned in another post he always had a welcoming smile and a joke in hand. He never seemed to run out of them! Thanks for the memories! ~gaffed~

That Jay Marshall was from 1994. He was always nice to me, even though I am just a nobody from New Jersey. Great guy!
