Looking for ideas to end the plain 'ol six stone Hot Rod, ideas for the "move" that changes one side solid/one side multi, and ideas for explanation/premise as to why the rod ends with two different sides.
In the past, I've always placed the rod in my closed fist half way in and said, "If I place it only halfway in my hand and give it a shake, it comes out half multi and half solid." This has worked fine, but there's something about it that just isn't right. I'm looking for something more plausible and mysterious, and although it ALWAYS sends the lay (even adults) away with quite a puzzling look and questioning, "How did you know that I'd pick the red one," while they turn the rod over and over. (You guys would not believe the guessed explanations I get from people....like, "Is there bearings under the stones?" Keep in mind that I use a clear plastic rod.) Anyway, I am looking for something more, and it's out there. Just thought I'd ask the brothers (and sisters). I've been practicing magic since I was 8 years old, and now I'm 33. I love magic, and to this day, the rod is still one of if not my favorite tricks. PS: By the way, I collect paddle moves. Right now, I have 5 switches/changes and 10 paddle moves. |

Get "Gem Busters" and go into that routine from the clear Hot Rod.

I always place the rod in THEIR hand and have them blow on it, which makes the rod go to 1/2 and 1/2.

I never liked the phase where you change it half and half. For those few who suspect a move, I think it just proves the method.
After I show both sides to the spectators "chosen color", I simply change it back to the original condition and put it away. My patter justifies this, and I quickly move on to my next effect. I have a 10" clear jumbo rod and typically use it as an opening effect because my patter allows for lots of interplay. It's a good trick to judge the receptiveness of the audience.

Nice..............good ideas, guys.
I've heard the "no explanation, put it away" method before. I like it, but not as a stand alone trick, and I do this routine as a stand alone all the time. Some times I might accompany it with one or two, at the most, routines/effects, but not often. But if I may ask, what is your patter/routine for the way you present this? Or, if you could just give me a rough outline maybe..... PS - I like the "in the hand idea". I'm not familiar with the Gem Busters, but I read the description and don t see how this would end a classic rod routine with the effect I'm trying to get. |

I had the same issues, so I now use the brass double-change HotRod. Now after I do the changes, if they ask to see it, I hand it over and it's all solid colors, same on both sides.

Okay, here's how I do the "Jumbo Hot Rod". The premise and patter was inspired by my good friend (and manager at the Magic Castle) Kurt Freitag. I bring out the Hot Rod and tell people it's a Karma Catcher. It will determine what color their Karma is. I ask if they've ever had their Karma RED. They will say "no". Then, I ask if they've ever had it any other color. You get the idea. I ask them to pick a gem (using the standard force) and have open their hands and hold them about 2 feet apart. I do the change to their color, showing both sides are the same. I then tell to "reset" the Karma Catcher, all you have to do is give it a shake, and it turns back to it's multi-color mode. That's the outline. PM me for all the patter.
Now, here's another idea. After you change it back, do a vanish using a French Drop kind of move, and instantly go to the pocket to bring out an ungimicked rod from your pocket.

Try this.
After your normal routine is over, with your left hand, reach into your pocket, grab a handfull of coins, candy, whatever you feel is good for the moment or makes sense to you. Tell them you have one more thing you wanted to show them with the "stick" or whatever you tell them it is. And simply do a flip-stick move over their hands or over the table as you drop everything in the left hand. It will look like it just dissolved into little candies, coins... I got this idea out of Magic Magazine a while back where a magician in the talk about tricks section used the flip-stick move with a sharpie marker to make it change into 4 half dollars to go into the next routine from either a signed card effect to a coins across or matrix. Just an idea. |

If you have a hotrod that isn't too huge, you could try a push-in vanish before "letting them inspect" the hotrod. There are a number of vanishes in the literature about pocket-knife magic that would work well.

See, that just goes to show you how people can see the same thing totally different. I always liked the "push it through half the hand, it changes on half the sides" bit. If you do each push through the same way, I just think it baffles them more...
I always ended my routine by hitting on my had hand three times and on the third time, sticking it behind my ear and clapping the hands together. The loud clap surprises them and sells the vanish. You can joke about the vanish and show it to them or retrieve by making appear from you elbow... IMHO, your mileage may vary... Quote: On 2008-10-11 14:23, Mediocre the Great wrote:

All very VERY good I couldn t say enough about the inspiration ALL you guys have given me........ thank you very much
I can t believe I ve been doing this trick for so long and I ve just recently started really getting spiritual about it there is so much you can do with simplicity ..........i guess my mind started to expand a lot after reading darwins book on strong magic ........great book and just let me say I hope this thread continues I'm more interested now than ever to see/hear how this #1 piece of magic has inspired others PS a little (and young) aspiring magi approached me the other day wanting to show me "a trick" never met him before ......he pulled out the rod ....had the move down pretty good......... I applauded him showed him a few of the moves I ve learned and then most importantly told him that this was magic that he would use for a life time |

One of the reasons I got the double change hotrod in brass years ago was so I could end with both sides changed to the chosen color.
Different opinions on it. I don't know who made mine, but it was long before it was "borrowed" by another manufacturer. RevJohn |

I'd suggest that if you take ANY routine you've been doing for years, and sat down for an hour or two, with the purpose of re-vamping it, perhaps to suit your personality or your working conditions, you'd find that you'd have a fair degree of success.
Try this. Next time you're thinking of looking for "new" material, consider working your old stuff again, with perhaps a modified routine. You may well be surprised how refreshing it can be. Not to mention cash-saving! Buying "new" material and props is the curse of most part-time magicians. And me. I STILL buy stuff with a view to "working it later...", but I DO spend a lot of time on my exisiting, and old routines. Regards, DCB

Goooooood advice
I'm worse than a part time magi.......im hobby in either case it can become a bad habit to constantly buy "new" material although I will add that I keep my eye open and ear to the rail and every now and again I ll come across somthing that rocks and I ll add it to the roster lately they have been inexpensive (and simple)....... after years of "trying" (and spending) you learn what to look for in ads and demo vids |

I always end the routine with a tap vanish, or some other vanish. It takes all the heat off the hot rod because it is no longer in play. I have never tried the half/half display. I'm not sure I like it, because it might give the spectator an idea of the method, just my opinion.
Hey DCB, OK, maybe we're getting a bit off topic, but with what has been happening to my investment accounts over the past year, I think I better spend more time reviewing what I already own and less time buying new stuff. I bet I don't use 70% of what I have purchased (probably more like 90%, but that's down right embarassing). Good advice! Sammy

Precision Magic offers examinable Hot Rods with a solid color on both sides or both sides containing multiple colors. Their Hot Rods are top-notch. You can perform your normal routine and switch the working one for the examinable one.
(I've heard the ball bearing one before. The most popular spectator guess is that the heat of my nand changes the colors of the gems. |

I use the presentation that its a jeweler's stick for helping people pick out a stone that might look nice in a ring. I mention some of the color's and mention what colors represent different birth months. I ask them what month they were born. If they mention the month that matches the color stone you were going to force, I go straight into the routine. If they happen to mention another month, I ask them to name a number of stones between one and six that might make for a nice ring. I mention that a single stone ring usually doesn't catch a lot of eyes and six stones might be somewhat gaudy. This subtlety influences them to chose between the 2 and 5. To be honest though, once I mention that to few stones and to many make for an unattractive ring, they usually name 3 or 4, the perfect number. I found a ring at Walmart that matches the force color with 3 and 4 stones for 13 dollars. One goes in each pocket so I know which one to grab.
To conclude the effect, I mention that as a jewelers stick I can't have just one stone to sell the customer. I casually place my hand in my pocket palming the ring out. I place the stick in my hand and slide it out so that it looks like the ring is being pulled from the stick. Once the ring is seen, I put away the stick so the emphasis is on the ring. It makes for a nice table hopping effect. DO |

@ Donny Orbit: Great idea, really great idea! Good story, good force, good ending! Congratulation!
@ Bendy: I had the same problem with color changing knives. Some times ago we could buy toy-cars for children which change color by the heat of hands. So I bought one of the knife-sets which consists of a knife with two colors on ONE side for the finish! But if spectator thinks our hand's heat is responsible for color changing so we failed in creating a magic moment they found an explination and that's enough for them (although it is wrong, although their thinking is funny for us). They think they detect our doing and that our effects are ridiculous easy. Angelo |
