My no nonsense doctor, who has flat out told me that vitamins are a waste of money before, prescribes fish oil pills for heart health. Fish oil increases good cholesterol which in turn lowers bad cholesterol.
I’m up to 6 pills per day. How about you?

Yes vitamins are a waste and in some cases can be bad for you.
Such as Vitamin C. There are studies that show that sythetic Vit C hardens the arteries around the heart. It's best just to eat fruit. As for fish oil.. it does work. I don't take it though, because I don't need it. I just don't eat stuff with cholesterol and fat in it. At least mostly... I don't eat meat, but some other stuff I eat has a little fat in it. But mostly I am fat and cholesterol free, and my blood work shows it. Randi |

I was told to take them too.
I don't, but I was told to.

I tend to have high Cholesterol, so I take prescription Lipitor daily, but at my last check both my HDL and LDL clolesterol levels were in check, so I was pretty pleased. Then my doctor ruined my elation by saying that my triglyceride count was too high, so he doubled my lipator prescription and has me taking 2000 mg of fish oil daily. I can't win for losing.
From what I have read only 20% of the cholesterol in your body comes from the food you eat--your body manufactures the other 80%

LOL, Lyndel you are too much. My cardiologist has me taking fish oil (and you have to read the label to get fish oil that does not contain cholesterol, some do and quite a bit of it), flax seed oil, and non flushing niacin every day. And still encourages me to eat cold water fatty fish a couple of times a week.

Is like the cod liver pills, they sold when I was a kid?
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

Same thing, except now they are in capsule form. No more punishment by Cod Liver Oil... Man that sucked.

I don't take fish oil capsules. I take flax seed oil capsules. I think my high cholesterol is hereditary, but it's not so high the doc has me on medication for it. Although, if I can't get it regulated with diet and exercise in the next year, I think that's what he'll do. I'm on 81mg of daily asprin therapy and I've got my trusty nitro tablets for my heart. I also take Nexium. So, if I can NOT have to take any more medications, I'm all for it!
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

A couple family members and a few friends use apple cider vinegar tablets. That's all they did, no real exercise or diet changes, and it worked like a charm. Talk to your doctor before you try it, as I've heard it can mess with some medications, but it's worth a shot if the fish oil doesn't work out (which can give you heartburn).

You are all very correct when you say that high cholesterol is mostly hereditary.
When my doctor told me I had high cholesterol I was determined NOT to go on Lipitor. So for 6 months I did not eat meat, eggs or cheese. I’ve always exercised regularly and am not overweight. So, that was not an issue. The result—only a slight decrease in my cholesterol. I went on Lipitor and fish oil pills and there was a dramatic decrease in total cholesterol and bad cholesterol and a nice increase in good cholesterol. For years my cholesterol has stabilized at around 135. ( HDL(Bad) 65, LDL(Good) 61) Now, I’m going to have bacon and eggs for breakfast. PS: Thanks to my friends in Canada who make my Lipitor affordable.

Yes, I failed to mention that was part of the 6 month experiment also. I have not seen any expert deny the health benefits of eating lots of fish.

One unfortunate side effect of pollution- higher concentrations of mercury at upper levels of the food chain. My wife and I can't eat as much of the larger deep sea fish as we'd like.
(On a side note, while pregnant women should definately take Omega-3 suppliments, they should avoid all fish oil-based ones, due to the risk of mercury consumption.) -Erik
