I need, for an effect, an old parchment (about XVIe century).
I try to do it myself, with coffe bath and others technics, but the result looks not very real. Where can I found parchment paper on the web? For the writting, china ink is the best? |

I don't know about online, but antique book & ephemera dealers should be able to provide indenture agreements, marriage licences, and other legal documents, which, if they date from the early 19th C. and before, are likely to be written on real parchment. You'll be able to erase and reuse the skin for your own purposes -- recycling the parchment the way they did back then.
Here in SoCal, such documents run about $20. Happy Haunting, Leland |

Ground pumice, available today from art supply dealers. Sandpaper should also do nicely. Book Of Kells? Hm. That would certainly lend an air of authenticity to the bit...

Use a good furniture wax after you stain the paper.

A solution of potassium permagnate and good old H2o and some crumpled up A4 will do the job. The solution will be bright purple ,dip the paper in it and allow to dry out . Colour will go from purple to brown and the creases in the A4 will go darker due to the "stress "cracking in the papers surface.
Hope this helps . Mark Ps you can print on a frsh sheet of paper but have to photocopy the sheet you need to dye otherwise you'll end uop with ink bleed.

If you want animal skin parchment, it is not that difficult to find. It is available online, though a bit on the costly side.
I make my own when I want to use parchment for things, as nothing screams louder to me than "fake" parchment look paper. That is me though. If you are talking 1500's, paper was available. Hand laid paper can be found in art stores, as well as mass made art papers in large sheets, 2feet by 3 feet or so. You will fold them up to make folios, quartos or octavos <sp> A little google on paper and bookmaking will get you some good info to let you make it look right, and handle correctly. For the lettering, if you are not comfortable doing it yourself, go to the local HS or J-college art department and ask for a student with calligraphy skills to do your lettering. Be willing to give them a few bucks or other recompense. Be attentive to the ink you use. If you are able to look at actual manuscripts in libraries of museums, you will see some very interesting things. India ink is fairly modern, so the use of ink in other colors might be advised. Depending on where you live, there are likely local re-enactors who will have a scribe student among them that is also a good resource. Kay

Try a drum shop. If you can find one that has some old skin drumheads, these are a bit thicker than normal parchment, but they are very similar.
Also, check the web for calfskin and/or goatskin drum heads. You want a drum head that is NOT fitted. Some paper shops have some excellent vegetable parchment. Use the word vellum as a search term.
