DStachowiak,
I found a trick called Wild Bill Hickok's hand in an old paperback Scarne card tricks book that I have and it is credited to Henry Christ. It involves spelling the words DEAD MANS HAND and WILD BILL to reveal the Aces and Eights, but I think since this was a book of self working tricks for the the general public, Scarne revised the trick to his own liking and as such it seems pretty lame. Bro John Hamman has a version where one deals two hands showing the Aces and Eight going to Wild Bill's hand, but then his opponent's hand is revealed to be the four 8's and Hickok's hand is now a Royal flush. The new Nick Trost book has this same plot only with an easier handling than the Hamman trick. I have a small collection of Old West stuff including a hat just like Hickok wore plus a neat derringer, some old poker chips, and a reproduction spittoon. I had the idea of building a little mini-theater piece around a Dead Man's hand trick by having a spectator put on the hat and a funny fake handlebar mustache. I even have a little blank starter pistol that I thought I might shoot off under the table for a surprise gun shot finish. Since I have always been an old West buff, I have read up quite a bit about old "Wild Bill" so I want the story to be somewhat factual, but humorous too. I did find this on YouTube and it appears to somewhat resemble the trick in the Scarne book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmnrgufSQ6g&feature=related This is better than the Scarne version, and I let you tell me if this is the original Christ trick. Unfortunately, I just don't care for spelling tricks, so I'm just not sure it will fit the story line for my little play-let. Well, anyway, I've got the deck and the props; I'll just have to work out the trick I want to fit my story. Cheers OOH, OOH, new brainstorm. I guess I could work this thing out like a Sam the Bellhop style story trick. Nah! Too much to have to remember.

I use them for a erdnence to age a chosen card(forced of corce). I guess you could make a Svengali deck out of one and a regular bicycle deck?

The clip shows the Scarne/Christ trick.
I found it in one of the Street magic magazines and immediatly used the 1800 deck for it. (I tried the 1864 deck that DStachowiak mentions but found it hard to handle due to the sharp corners, also the absence of indices makes it less clear) I actually use the patter from the Jinx where the spectator chooses one of the five cards and it is arrived at after the first spelling sequence (DEAD MANS HAND etc). Then in the second part I tell the spectator to imagine that he is in the same game back in deadwood and ask him what position he is in, 1 to 5. One doublecut later I can deal out five hands, the dead mans hand going to the spectator. If you end with a gunshot (as in the video) it really startles people (this idea is also from the jinx).
