Greetings Funny People—

For some time I have been using The Magic (Talking) Drawing Board in my corporate shows as well as my kids shows. I use it as a “roast” of the CEO or some other high ranking businessman when I work for different companies. Of course I spend a lot of time before the event getting to know whoever my target is that evening. Usually I record that executive doing the script so when the Drawing Board comes alive it is using that person’s actual voice.

Is anyone else using this great prop for adult shows (as opposed to kid shows)? If so, how are you using it? How about other Axtell props? Does anyone have any ideas for the new robots?

I feel that the Magic Drawing Board is one of the best 5 comedy magic props to come out in my almost 35 year career. I see a lot of people in this thread doing some great improv exercises. Maybe we can brainstorm on ways to use the MDB in our comedy shows.

…any thoughts, comments, ideas or complaints?

To get more of a head start I would recommend you to check the "It's a real boy" section. Professional ventriloquist are there who can support you with better lines because of their experience working with dummies. The can also recommend you to the right books.

Axtell has CD's with the puppets words on it already. I am not sure if the lines are for adults. You might want to ask him.

Hi Dynamike—

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I am here because I really want the opinions of comedy magicians. I have already been lurking on the vent thread but since I do not do any ventriloquism work (I use a pre-recorded tape) there wasn’t much there for me and my purposes.

I'm not really looking for lines. I wanted to see if any other comics have been using the MDB and how they use it when working for adults.

Again, thanks for for the suggestions...

I just did a search:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=24

http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=24

You might want to draw him as Elvis Presly. Have the CD play a few lines of his song while the mouth is moving. Erase the picture and draw Michael Jackson. Have the CD play a few lines of his song with the mouth moving. Erase the picture and draw Bill Cosby. Have the CD play some funny lines you can combine with your lines. Of course there can be different people with different voices. And when you draw each person, do it in a comical manner.

You might want to search for more ideas on You Tube.

Here are a few more ideas dealing with the above. On one of the drawn characters erase the mouth as he is talking. Have the CD play the sounds of a person when gagged up. For Michael Jackson, near the end of his song, the CD plays, "Oh, oh, my hair is on fire. Someone please help me." When erasing Elvis Presley, have only his mouth remaining. The CD plays "Elvis has left the building" as the mouth moves.

You know, I've never thought of the board as for kids, but it has that image probably just from my own use of it over the years. In adult audiences it goes over just as big and really gets great laughs. The strength of the routine is in drawing someone's face on the board that is sitting in the audience and making them "say" or "sing" something that they would never really do. Like the CEO of a corporation, or the sales manager, or the guy in the front row that every comedian picks on. You can have a simple sound track canned if you don't do vent, or just talk over it.

Scott Francis does college tours with the board and has come up with a big finish he gets standing O's from adults. At the end of a canned song the big finish is a ..... we'll here's the video clip... in the section called "Ta-Da"...

I saw Jay Johnson's one man show The Two And Only, in New York at the Helen Hays Theater.
He used the board and it was awesome, as was the rest of Jays show. The audience was mostly adults, and they loved the drawing board.

I noticed the adults liking the Magic Drawing Board more than the kids.

In my own routine everyone loves it. Everyone gets involved in the fun and interaction because I feel it is a strong family-style effect.

Jay Johnson's a great example of it with an adult audience....Winner of a Tony award for his Broadway show "the Two and Only". Harry Anderson bought Jay his first board as a Christmas gift....I think it was back in 87 or 88.

Jay can be seen using the board here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKzkk2Hp7eY&feature=channel

Last night Ken Scott performed his adult show at the Magic Castle using the Magic Drawing Board. It went over great. He drew a picture of a woman in the audience and then lipsynched some pop songs with it. It killed. He also used the Tada Hands by Scott Francis which pop out for a big finish.

I have to say I was very worried about doing this for adults let alone the magic castle. To say the least the routine has been killing!!!

I have always used the board but in kid shows never in adult show. Like I said BIG hit. I took my signature routine out of the show this time at the castle to add this routine.

It was great to Axtell and his group in the audience to see what I have done with the board.

Thanks AX!

Ken,
Are you going to post any video of your performance? Would love to see it!

Thanks

Floyd,

I was there to see Ken's routine twice, and it was brilliant. He even used the "kids" music version of it, and it had everyone in stitches. Ken is really on to something here. I'm sure it was tough putting his signature routine aside, but that's the only way we grow, through making changes. Congrats Ken...

Yes very true, and if he used the kids music version then bravo for pulling that off at the castle. Awesome stuff here for sure. Like I said, would love to see it.. The board is very nice for kids shows, but it seems not many will use it for adults.
From what I have seen its best to use music for adult shows, and besides what is on YouTube I wonder what other types of music routines have been tried.
Interesting to say the least.

I got to see Ken perform at the Castle as well and I agree. It Killed. Having the audience member singing Duo's with the board was hilarious.
