I am on the hunt for a semi-casual black vest. It doesn't need to have tons of pockets, but enough to carry 1-2 decks of cards, some coins, and a few other things such as pens and markers.
I need to look perfessional, but also don't want to look like I'm going to the Opera or anything . Also I would want this vest to work for any kind of a stand-up or parlar mini-show, maybe at a family resturant or a small Café, etc. Any suggestions and/or website links? Thanks, Evan |

Hi Evan,
There's already a discussion going on about this very thing, do a search on "vest" and you should find it. Here's a couple of sites I've found - http://www.buy4lesstuxedo.com/?src=overture http://www.cheaptux.com/?source=overture http://www.formalwearltd.com/index.html http://www.internationalmale.com/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=10230 http://205.217.9.115/merchant2/merchant.......6-00-850 I just ordered one of these from Bob James, it hasn't arrived yet. I just bought a new black leather vest. I bought it from a country western store in Fl. called Griffs. Don't know the web sight but you can find it on google. The vest looks good with jeans or with dress pants. It was on close out for $25. It comes with 2 pockets but I had 4 internal pockets added for $28 bucks. If you get one ask for a size smaller than you normally wear.

I'll second Mark's comments about Daytona Magic's apparel.
I've got a vest that Harry Allen sold me at a convention and I wear it all the time when performing. |

Try Men's Wearhouse or some other men's tuxedo shop or suit shop. there are plenty of them around. They all sell a variety of vests.

Check out Goodwill or other thrift shops, you'll be surprised what you can find there. Also check out eBay.

OK this is not based on anything magical really - but I hate vests. It's something about the way they look, especially if you don't have broad shoulders. I think they lend themselves to looking very professional. But then again I know great magicians who were them. So maybe it's me but I just can't stand them.
Does anyone else agree? Matt |

Hank Lee's markets a vest that was developed by Close-Up Magician Eddie Raymond. It's adjustable and designed specifically for the table-hopper. Go to http://www.hanklee.com and do a search for Vest

Check out Tuxgear.com.
I purchased a black bartending vest for $32, priority mail included. It was sent to me within 3 days of ordering. It has two pockets in the front and 4 spacious pockets on the inside. I like it a lot and it's relatively inexpensive. |

I've used the Eddie Raymond vest. Has plenty of pockets, but it shifts around too much, sticking-out from inside my jacket.
I think a good solution is to have a seamstress sew extra pockets in a vest. |

Also at Hank Lee's, check out the Close-Up Carrier designed for the walk-around, table hopper.
It's functional but remains out of sight. (plus it's $20, which is FAR less than you'll spend on an actual vest) |

You can try Wah-Maker. They make a wide variety of very nice vests, reasonably priced, well made and sewn in the USA to boot.
you can find a variety here http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/Category.c......pe=store I bought the one of the red dragon ones for my HP act and am very pleased with it.

I have to agree with Payne on the Wah-Maker vests from the link posted above. I bought the Black Rock and Dragon vests from them, both on sale, and I am very happy with them. I talked to a lady there and asked about vests that did not specifically look western. She suggested several and she was correct. Highly reccommended! Bob

HI,
I prefer to get my vests (waitscoats we call them)taylor made I like mine a little longer than normal more like a jacket without sleeves, i think this gives a smarter apearence around the waist area particularly when bending forward . Phillip |

To Leeman,
Just an offbeat thought for you, since you're wanting to get into topit work. Have you seen the DVD Suspended Dimension? It's Sylvester the Jester's clever idea of a way to do Topit work without a coat. It may or may not be something that you'd like, but I think it's worth considering. The DVD was put out by Kevin James and you can find it at most magic retailers. If you have trouble locating it, email me and I can help. To all, You may be surprised at how reasonale it is to get a seamstress to make a vest for you. Not much more then what you'll pay in a Tux Shop, and you can choose the style, color, number and placement of pockets, etc. And, your seamstress could do the version that p.b.jones describes in his post. I find that idea intriguing. You can find seamstresses just about anywhere. If you don't find some listings in your Yellow Pages, just go to a good fabric store. They usually have a notebook or bulletin board with business cards from a variety of seastresses. Denny http://www.loomismagic.com Denny http://www.loomismagic.com
