Saturday I was straightening up the last few household items in my garage that weren't organized for the winter when a car pulled into my driveway. The driver and passenger were looking at the house and me with lost looks on their faces. The driver got out while the passenger was looking at papers in her hand. His first remark was, "This doesn't look like the magic store. This doesn't look like the magic shop."
I live in a colonial, in the middle of a large subivision next to two others. There are no magic shops in any direction for at least two large suburban cities. I told him no, but I am a magician, and had sold few things recently. I asked him how he got my address. He told me off the Internet. The only way to do that would be from whois . That would mean that he would have to see my items on ebay, figure out my identity, then check whois. Or see my website, which clearly is NOT for a magic shop. The more likely possibility is that the local civic club, which sold me an ad in their newsletter, gave him my address without noting that I am not a magic dealer. I recently had an eBay purchase fall through, and perhaps I should have sold him my Disecto, but I was too creeped out. How could this guy get my address without knowing that I'm not a dealer? |

In the past, I have had people call me, asking about magic items for sale. They assumed I was a store. Sometimes looking for magic tricks, and sometimes looking for Ouija boards (yuk!) They found my business name and number in the phone book.
In the past, I have also had a person show up at my door (uninvited), wanting me to cure her, or rid her of bad luck, or something like that. The person was deaf, and had an interpreter with her in tow. She thought I had real "powers" because I was a magician she found in the phone book. I don't do mentalism, bizarre magic, occult themes, or anything like that in my shows. So, there is no reason they should expect that of me, if they knew me or had seen my show. Sometimes unusual things happen. - Donald

Well, that's the thing, my business is registered to this address. Also my domain registrar is not one that offers the privacy option, but apparently I should switch. I really should have asked whether he was looking for that Disecto. In the attic above the garage I have a stock escape made after the U. F. Grant pattern ready to use that I plan on selling, too bad I was caught off guard.
I gave him directions to the closest magic shop and got into the house. I guess I could have just casually picked up the hatchet from the workbench! ;-) |

Okay, there IS a business directory for my state that lists me under a heading that includes magic stores. But I wrote my own copy for the listing and it DOES NOT say that I have a magic store. But that could be where the guy saw me.
How do you like that? Three years on the site and that's the first guy who's contacted me because of the site as far as I know. |

Not really creepy, but you should have asked the couple how they got your address.
If you're on Google maps, the service will pinpoint your location on the map if you provided your address at some point. |

That is kind of creepy. I've never had anyone call thinking I was a dealer or healer. I did have someone call thinking I was an escort service though.

Dean , it took me about 10 seconds to find your address. 10 more seconds to be looking at the front of your house. (windows need a clean.)
As you said a whois search tells all. But also typing your phone number into google tells all. that's info provided by you on your website. Hey, you live just 47.6 miles by road from Dave Castle |
