Greetings and Salavations,

just curious to whom here performs walk-around while maintaining their 'bizarre' styling. What effects do you do walk-around and how do you 'sell' this. My reason for asking is that I do have several pieces that I perform, some are close-up but most require a hefty setup and are done during special events.

I have had someone ask about doing a complete bizarre 'edgy' walk-around night. I have some ideas but would like some feedback on whether this is something that a lot of people do and what they do....if you know what I mean.

Thanks

My thoughts are in a lot of situations where there are distractions - loud music, lots of partying, bizarre would be a tragic waste. In an intimate setting, it kills. Personally, I would not perform bizarre if I didn't feel the atmosphere would sell it. I tend to try and create more intimate settings within the larger event, even if it is just sitting around a coffee table together.

After recently releasing my e-Book on the Dutch Looper (Wizards' Journal #17 - Double Dutch Loopers) I started playing around with the idea of making a Tarot version, where the "death" card keeps reappearing, but can't be grabbed by a spectator. Or you could go the other way where they always get a "death" card. I will try them both out at the one Halloween Party I'm allowed to attend this year, and see how it goes. I'm always the death of any party I attend anyway.

I perform mentalism and bizarre effects regularly (6 times a week) at different corporate and club settings. I can get a reaction in any venue (as is the subject of my upcoming book on adapting your effects in the field of mentalism)

A few wonderful and fast effects I always carry with me is a modified version of Deddy Corbiziers Free Will (using small unusual items that fit in a small purse in my pocket), Coin key or metal bending of any kind (mixed with a tattoo force on my arm of a twisted spoon) and having a couple creepy "Haunted" items on me (doll, petrified finger) that you can use in any card or effect you have in your repertoire.

I guess also look really really odd- I am known in Toronto for my streaked hair and three piece vintage suits, odd demeanor and penchant for scaring people.

Good luck

I do agree with Clifford on this one. If you cannot set up the atmosphere then bizzare is wasted and actually doesn't seem that izzare anymore. And depending on the venue, if people eat and drink there too I wouldnt do anything that has something that is not yummy (mumified fingers and such Smile) because some people might loose their appetite.
A nice and spooky effecty that is easy to perform is for example "a kind and gentle stranger" (goes somewhat into Spellbinders direction) with a regular or tarot deck. Generally I would use something that is easy to set up carry and reset. Cards are good since put in the right with the right presentation and story behind the trick there are some pretty spooky stuff one can do. Oh From Hell is also a nice thing to do Smile Diddnt perform it yet (its still on the way to my mailbox) but I can imagine how you can stun people with it!

Dark Museum is a walkaround. It can be Bizarre in a couple of meanings of the word. I like to think of it as Bizarre Adventure.

Hey Spell, what if they were grasping at Life, and couldn't get it? The alternatives would be Death or Limbo.

I know, there's no card for Limbo, but when did that ever stop a good story?

As far as effects, yes I agree Doug's 3 No Evil or Dark Museum are fantastic. I would also do something like the effect Eugene presented in one of the psychdelic dvds - "Game with a stranger", "Devils bedposts" or something like that. That one is a hoot - dark, humorous and creepy - and fantastic if you can get people to actually sign away their soul! I mean what better way to prove your worth to the host than showing him that you were so good, you even got his guests and friends to give you their souls! For some backend money, you could sell their souls to him Smile Depending on the devil in him, he just might take you up on it. So present it in a nice portfolio.

I never did this for walk around but I have used it in shows.
Si Stebbins your favorite Tarot Deck.
Take out all of the Page cards (nobody will notice...really)And the Major Arcana.
Si Stebbins the rest, (the classics always work and with Tarot cards NOBODY will ever see the pattern even if your showing it to their faces.)

Through out the night let people cut the deck (they shouldn't touch it otherwise for it's your special fortune telling deck, that should take care of the whole, "I anna shuffle them" worry)

Then without having seen the card, you can do a reading for them that goes with the card and leads up to revealing what the card is. Or, you if you don't want to do readings you can some how "read" the emotional hit you see in their faces as to what the card might be. Any number of ways to go about it once you already know that the card is. Sometimes you might confuse yourself when doing the math in your head because instead of CHASED you're looking at Wands/Cups/Swords/Penticals but that just takes a little getting used to that's all.
