my worthless sentence: I am kevin. william goldman wrote princess bride and butch cassidy. I am unclear about the theory of relativity. in french: je suis kevin. william goldman a ecrit princess bride et butch cassidy. je suis pas clair sur la theorie de la relativite. in german: ich bin kevin. william goldman schrieb prinzessin braut und butch cassidy. ich bin nicht kiar uber die relativitatstheorie. how is it? thanks kevin

The German is fine, supposing that you mistyped "klar" as "kiar". "Theory of Relativity" should be "Relativitaetstheorie": WHAM! and WOW! They missed an umlaut, but had the translation 100% correct. I'm impressed.

The French is not good. The nouns are good, but the verbs are poorly chosen. You would never say "Je suis Kevin", rather you would say "Je m'appelle Kevin" (I call myself Kevin, literally.)
As for authorship, you would say "goldman est l'auteur" (goldman is the author). In the third sentence, "I am unclear" would not be translated directly; you could say "I do not understand" or "I do not know" or something like that. Gramatically, you could never say "Je suis pas" you would say "je ne suis pas" (I am not) but "suis" is the wrong verb here regardless. Of course, a number of accents are missing. I am aware of the number of accents that were missing, either I couldn't find them on my keyboard or didn't want to take the time.
Would the french make sense to a french person, in terms of basic communication?

The French should work fine. The translation is pretty much direct and word-for-word. Even though in proper native French they might want to phrase it differently, the translation you got is pretty much as good as you're going to get from a machine.
The real test isn't to use arbitrary sentences, but sentences that have some situational meaning. For instance, if you need a bathroom, and you type in "Where is the bathroom?", would the result end up being something that properly communicates to a French person that need? Another fun test is to translate it, and then try to translate it back.

A college buddy suggested literal translation as a sure fire way to insult. Just think in your native language and then translate the words into theirs. Sure to get odd looks and irritate.
;) Expert systems with lots of human user input may get some of the idiomatic phraseology mapped between languages soon.

The meaning is clear in the French translation, even if the French itself is not perfect.

The french version is not that good. Of course, it makes sense and it's even possible, in certain circumstances, to speak like that, but it's not good french. It's sounds like a machine work. The problem with french is that we don't phrase stuff as "easily" as you do in english.
You should say: "Je m'appelle Kevin. William Goldman est l'auteur de "La princesse mariée" et de "Butch Cassidy". Je ne suis pas très clair sur la théorie de la relativité". Well, there are other possibilities. French is a terrible language . But the big mistake is not to use accents. Without accents, some words have differents meanings... |

Try typing in "I am hot" in the German one and see what it comes out as...
Though, I was taught it'd be "Ich heiße Kevin." Not "Ich bin Kevin."

"Ich heiße Kevin" means "I'm called Kevin", which is just another way of saying "Ich bin Kevin." They teach "Ich heiße" because it's slightly more formal. Maybe. If I were introduced to Frau Merkel, I would probably just say my name, which is the most common way of introducing oneself.
I agree with the "I am hot" test. Try it, Kevin. |

Yes, the French is not good at all. I wonder why it couldn't translate something so simple, better. Odd I think.

I ran the French past my Francophone mother-in-law last night. She agreed that all three sentences were formally incorrect, but was clear that if anyone spoke those sentences in a Francophone community they would be understood. "It would be clear that he was not French, but the sentences would, of course, be acceptable."

Here is where I show my ignorance, do you mean input I am hot in english (from english to german), or german to english? I am hot translates to " ich bin heib" (the "b" is one of those "weird" b's, I don't know how to find the keys on my keyboard...)

You did it right.
The problem is that "I am hot", literally translated, means something like "hot and bothered". "Ich bin heiß" is therefore a good test for whether the translation is overly literal. Proper German for "I am hot" is "mir ist heiß". So your iphone failed the test. Don't worry about it, though. If you should go to Octoberfest some day, and tell one of the ladies, "Ich bin heiß", well...nothing to worry about. |
