Okay I am watching a video on youtube and suddenly, my laptop crashes.
I restart and back up my work. I start doing some browsing again and low and behold a couple hours later, it crashes on me again. I don't have the blue screen up long enough to read it and it is ****ing me off. What do I do? I need this computer for school. -Matt

Reboot while repeatedly pushing F10. This will put it in Recovery mode. Once you get your screen, you'll see an option for system restore to an earlier date. Follow that route.
and always back up your work incase you have to do a full system recovery.

Will doing that affect my data? Or will it just affect the system?

I have been thinking of downgrading to xp. Would the be recommended. I was told I need more memory in order to run vista. My laptop has 2 gigabytes.
I tried doing a system restore point and it does not complete it. It simply says 'System restore did not work.'

My eldest son just bought a new PC and the first thing he did was wipe Vista and install XP and all new drivers! He said it was a long tedious process but the end result was just what he wanted!
I have yet to hear anything good about Vista and I would really like to buy a new laptop but I'd like the option of XP over Vista! The more I hear about Mac the more I think that's where I'm headed! |

Actually, another option so many people overlook is Linux. I was recently in Target, playing around with little $400 laptop by Asus called the Eee PC. For what most people really need a laptop for, this would be perfect. If I didn't already have 2 Macs, this would be the ticket for me. You can also put Linux on any PC for free, you may want to look into it.

I don't know what your problem is, Matthew W, but things I wonder are is your hard disk nearly full, have you run a virus checker and a spyware / malware checker lately, have you defragged the disk lately, run a disk check, etc.? Have you installed any new software lately?

My hard drive is a little over half full. I didn't install anything new. I removed a bunch of software that I installed but didn't use after the first crash, to clear up some space.
Would it be dangerous to do a full system restore, would it do more damage than good?

I hated PC's when I used them ... always freezing up or crashing.
OS X zero crashes to report since 2000.

Hey Pepka,
I have an Asus, I am very happy with it. I stick an 8 gig SD card in for extra storage room and it works great. Anywhere that there is WiFI I am ready to go. Boots up in less than 20 seconds too!

Two ideas:
1 - Remove your hard drive, replace it with another. Boot from CD, install Vista (or anything else, for that matter) to that disk. Port your personal files over to the new disk (one way would be to enclose the old hard drive in a portable hard drive case - the new system should recognize it). 2 - Don't replace your hard drive, boot from CD, then completely reinstall Vista. |

I used XP for years and have used Vista for the past year and a half or so. It takes awhile to get used to Vista, but they both have pros and cons. You can do a restore, but put all the files you want saved on disks (a good idea anyway). Sometimes during a restore, things get moved around or deleted when they shouldn't.
Don't put all your chips on restore fixing your problem, though. If you get automatic updates, and one or more of those caused your problem, it will get updated again if you don't stop it. It could also be a problem with your hard drive or RAM or....and a system restore won't fix those things. If you're really ambitious, you can look up information on reading dump files. Dump files can tell you why your system is crashing. Several years ago, XP started repeatedly crashing, and general troubleshooting didn't solve the problem. I learned how to get info from dump files with success. I haven't had to do that in Vista.

The method I gave you won't damage your existing data. A system restore will only take the computer back to a previous working configuration. All data should stay the same.
A system RECOVERY will erase your data. Sounds to me like you don't want this. I recommend backing up you files that you want to save. You cannot back up your stuff too often. PM me if you have further questions, if you like.

A "system recovery" is what you do to return your OS to working order. Within the options of a recovery, there's a "system restore," which restores your system to an earlier restore point, and a "complete PC restore," which restores what's on your hard disk from a backup. Complete PC restore isn't an option in Vista's home versions. And, yes, when I used the system restore option in XP, files which shouldn't have been were moved and deleted. Luckily, I was able to undo the restore and get most things back. However, if you do a system restore in safe mode, it can't be undone. For info about these options in Vista, click here.

So are you unable to log on at all? or does XP just crash after a hour or so?
If you log on and it crashes, you may have a virus. Make sure your antivirus is up to date and run a full system scan. Do a disk cleanup, then a defrag. to do this easily, click the Start button, lower left toolbar. type "disk" you will get both options. Then if the problem continues, click Start button and type "system restore". Restore to the recommended restore. If you need an antivirus, I use AVGFree, it's free and has caught everything I've given it (And I've put it through it's paces). I would use the system disk as a last resort. It will come with a repair function, but it has yet to work for me... But by the time I need to use it I have usually done too much damage.
