Doug has a fantastic idea. Get out and entertain people waiting in line. It'll make the time go by quicker- and keep people voting (and you might end up with some tips in your hat.)
I'm excited that, for once, there's so much interest in our election- usually voter turnout is abysmal, especially in non-battleground states. I just hope that everyone who is willing and able to cast a vote gets to cast the vote- for some people it can be difficult to stand in line for so long. -Erik

Well they actually had chairs available at the polling place we were at this morning. Already there were long lines when we arrived before the polls opened. That is great to see. I just hope that people do not turn away when they drive up and see long lines and decide not to vote. The record turn out is encouraging and I think maybe people are just feeling it hit them a bit more this year based on gas prices and the economy and such. Either way, by the end of the night, history will be made.

I just voted and it's a big turn out here in Oklahoma also. But I would not bet even odds on which candidate will win but the losers will be the people no mater what the results of the election is.

I posted this in the other voting thread, but I felt I should cross-post it here.
You should not only get out and vote, but be prepared to defend your right to vote. There are already reports of voter suppression tactics, such as the Black Panthers in Philadelphia blocking the door to polling places and brandishing night sticks (Interestingly, when news stations arrived to cover the story, the Black Panthers accused the news stations of trying to suppress the vote). If you see evidence of voter suppression at your polling place, call the Election Protection Center, run by the non-partisan voter watchdog group Election Protection, at 1-866-OUR-VOTE. You can track reports of problems at OurVoteLive.org. If you have one, don't be afraid to take a video camera or camera phone with you to capture the evidence. Update: Make sure it's a real voter suppression tactic before you report it. One lady in Ohio reported a "pro-Republican poster" at the high school polling place within the no-electioneering boundaries. When it was checked out, it was a school poster concerning leadership, with a picture of Abraham Lincoln (I'm pretty sure he's already served his maximum of 2 terms). The school was told by the election commission that they did not have to remove it. |

Be sure to stop and get something to eat on the way home from the voting booth.

You're right, balducci. I'll wait until I see it reported on a trustworthy station, like CBS. Which reminds me, how's that career going, Dan Rather?

OK, as requested, I've switched over to the balducci- and kcg5-approved news media, so I can learn more of evil, dastardly, mustache-twirling Republican voter intimidation, and poor misunderstood Democrats groups like the black panthers and their back-scratchers that were mistaken for nightsticks.
You will let me know if I engage in any other wrongthink, won't you? |

I just voted. I got my little sticker and everything! There was no line to speak of--just had to wait for the guy already in the booth to finish up. By the time I was done, there was one person waiting for her turn.
I'm now packing up so I'm ready to leave the country tomorrow. Depending on how things turn out, I might decide to come back! (I really am leaving, but not because of the election. I'm pretty sure I'll come back no matter how things turn out.) -Brad |

But I certainly agree with you so far as if one sees ANY intimidation at voting places, by all means report it.

Balducci did they ask you if you registered or try to stop you from voting? It's a simple YES or NO question. LOL

I just spoke to my sister, who lives in the Philly area (but in the Republican dominated country side and not in the city proper). Very quiet at her voting place. According to CNN reports, other parts of Philly are having no problems with voter intimidation. For example, despite the long lines, Ron Jones has voted a couple of times. Don't worry, though, as Ron Jones voted for change so, to quote the CNN reporter, "That's OK."
