I was at the bellytalkers forum and I was looking at the photo gallery there. There was an early picture of Edgar Bergen and Charlie. With them in the photo was a girl figure. In the description it said the girl figure's name was Laura. Does anyone know what happned to Laura?

Hi Wanlu,

I think your talking about Podine Puffington. That was his life size figure he danced with in one of the TV specials he did.

Bergen also had a figure named Lars Landquist also.

No, Bergen did have a girl figure early in his career but stopped using her.

Tom Ladshaw or VentHaven would probably know what happened to Laura. You might want to try contacting the VentHaven Museum through the web site. Tom can be reached through WorldVents.

I also noticed in some of his clips that Mr Bergen used to call Mortimer...Mortimor Smile Is this true or do I have a hearing problem? Smile

No Wanlu, I too have also thought I heard Bergen say Mortimor a few times.

I wonder why Bergen stoped using Laura?

I'm guessing we all experience that stage in our career that we think of a character and we don't like it so we stop using it Smile

I guess, he was happy and contented with his act with Charlie, Mortimer and Effie. Smile

In my case...I have used a lot of figures...BUT I don't think I have the figures Im looking for yet. Although I'm quite happy with my Poyner and Mack as well as with my local figure, I will be more happy to own ONE OF A KIND kid, granpa/granma and bum figures Smile

He did use a female figure early on, but quit using her.

Mortimer was originally "ELMER" as seen in "The Knecking Party" - but later changed to Mortimer Snerd.

Podine came much later on.

The book "Dummy Days" talks a little about Laura. Apparently after Bergen realized how well audiences responded to Charlie, he dropped the Laura figure from the act in the early 20's and worked exclusively with Charlie for 10 or 12 years until the introduction of Mortimer and Effie in the mid 30's. Think about that, 10 or 12 years doing multiple shows daily with one character. It says a lot about why Charlie was such a fully realized character. One thing to keep in mind though is that the typical vaudeville act was short, ten minutes maybe, so one good character would be plenty. I believe the time Bergen spent developing Charlie's character is what enabled him to succeed on the radio as a ventriloquist. By the time America met Charlie, he was as close to 'real' as a wooden kid can get.

In "A Neckin' Party", Mortimer is listed as Elmer Mortimer Snerd, at least in IMDB he is. That seems to be his first appearance. This short film pre-dates Bergen's start in radio by only a few months.

When it comes to "goof" type figures, I think Mortimer Snerd, is, and always will be the figure that all others are measured by....

Mortimer was, and has always been my favorite Bergen figure, by far....

If you check out the blog today on ventriloquist central. You will see a great goof style figure made by the late Brian Hamilton.

Hi Dan,

That is one NICE figure!

How many of these Hamilton Mortimers did he create? What is their ballpark value today?

AC,
This is the only wooden Hamilton figure I have found in all the time I have been collecting. Unfortunately I don't think he produced many although his catalogue showed a nice selection of wooden figures. To me he is priceless because of the rareity!!

Hi Dan,

Priceless indeed, quite a figure. One of the best "mort types" I have seen.

I'm definitely searching for a similar figure, a Mort type.

I now wish I woulda snagged the Hartz Mortimer off of ebay that Wanlu got - sounds like it is a nice figure.
