WD-40 - spray a few times and clean with paper or towel.
The rust will disapear and the cane is like new.

I believe gun oil also works.

Once you get it cleaned up, get a bottle of Blueing (I got mine at Walmart in the sports department), and follow the directions. If the ends need attention, get a roll of White duct tape and finish with this. Your cane will look (and work) like new.

I like using white gaff tape better.... You can get white gaff from a theater supply house. They normally have it in 1" ROLLS OR THE 2" ROLLS.. you should get the one inch roll.
I hope this helps. Taylor

You might try naval jelly which is known for removing rust. My other suggestion would be to take it to a clock maker/repair shop. These guys are wonder workers.

Excuse me but some of the new ones are not as good as the Walsh for some specific effects.

Once you clean it can you spray paint it? Or get it powder coated? Just asking as I don't know much about it.

I've looked at all the new ones, and none compares with the Walsh appearing cane. If mine ever breaks or wears out, I'll get a new one, but not until then. Then again, it's 40 years old now, so it will probably outlive me.

You can paint the tip of the cane or use the tape as suggested. The rest of cane is only lightly oiled. There is some discussion as to leaving them collapsed or extended. I have left my Walsh closed for years with no problems.
Jimhlou, I am with you on the Walsh canes but I have already gotten several backups to be ready. Probably some guy will end up buying them from my estate. Richard
