Ok I am all for spending top dollar for quality, but I had no idea that a set of pre 1921 morgan dollars could go for $1200 as listed on Ebay. According to the description it's a shell set where the shell fits every coin. Isn't that basically the same as an expanded shell? I understand the amount of time and effort that goes into custom coin work, I just would think for 1200.00 one could get much more bang for ones buck. (in my opinion). Curious to what you guys think.

That's way too much. I can't see spending that much on 4 coins and a shell. (On a set of cups, yes.) What is the big deal that they were custom made? Even from the description, it seems they are just soft Morgans that still have their shine. I have a drawer full. The set can't be THAT much. Can it? Someone who really knows coins needs to speak up.

One could even say it's an exorbitant amount!

I know coins very well... While I would say that most precision stuff is well worth the price charged, this is overpriced for a cut down shell set. I have perfect set of cut down soft morgans with beutiful patina... I picked it up on auction for about 375 a year or 2 ago... Worth every penny. This is perfect exsample of supply and demand. People want expert work and are unwilling to wait, so they will pay more to get the work second hand. I personally don't think it is right. They put a ton of work in to the coins. .. and then some joe smoe make more off of the sale. I say buy from makers direct. You know what your getting, who your getting it from and the money is going to the craftman that deserves the sale...

I have a number of including one like this. $1,200.00 is way too high. If anyone buys it at that price, they certainly have money to burn.

I have a couple of lassen sets and couldn't see myself spending 1200 on a four coin set. but as previously stated it is a supply and demand market.

I just got off the phone with Todd. He sells a set of 5 (one expanded s***l) for just under $300. I suppose that is the 1921 variety (but the price wont vary much for pre-1921). Unless you want a carson city mint of the more rare years. He was aware of the guy selling his set for $1200. Apparently he is a scammer of sorts.

Apparently he is a scammer of sorts. Apparently he knows how to get a hold of coins that folks want, and that's just business as usual. The price he's asking is obviously insane, but that doesn't make him a scammer. I guess that would be your "of sorts" disclaimer though |

These ended up selling for a much more reasonable $595 (though still pretty high IMO)
