As most of you know, I don't pimp out many effects... A small handfull of my own and about the same of others... My own because I use em... Others... Well, for the same reason.
This brings us to Sprung and Dagger. By Ryan Schlutz. Did I buy this effect? No... But I have been sent TONS of C R A P over the years. I either don't review it or tell it like it is... And this is just fun to do! It is basically a card stab as far as your audience is concerned... But Sooo easy. Is it a reputation maker? Who knows... Everyone claims their stuff is... My opinion is that the effect is just a tool to build entertainment with... The performer is the craftsman... But this IS a fun tool to play with... Minimal sleight... (Control a card). Big build up and a fun visual payout... And only 15 bux! Try it...Its worth yer time. Available only from Jeff Pierce Magic

Doomo you are correct a small price to pay for a bing pay out.
I love rubberband effects and this little gem is a perfect way to reveal a chosen card even if if one dosen't want to use the dagger card. do your self a big favor and check it out, highly recommended vinny |

Quote: Now you see I don't even think of this as a rubber band effect, just a great way of revealing a card - or even better a great whole routine when used with the supplied gimmick.

I was aware of a similar move that uses cards and a rubber band - but this one was totally new to me. It's great fun very visual and I definitely something I will use in my close up set. |

I am happy to read so many are enjoying Sprung & Dagger! You are definitely right though, depending on the crowd, the second patter really goes over well. =) Also, what is great about the reveal is that it can be delayed. Even when the deck is “loaded” you can set the deck down on a table without fear of spoiling the surprise.

This looks like a neat effect. I watched the demos but had difficulty seeing what pops up from the deck. What is on the card? A picture of a sword? On a scale of 1-10 how difficult is this trick to master?

Hey Tester,
The effect is very easy to pull off. At a convention this past weekend I taught two gentlemen with zero knowledge of card handling how to do the “moves”. Those I taught with some experience had it down in their second try. In the instructions I describe 3 ways to control the selected card – A hard, medium & easy method. All three look extremely fair. At the end of the effect, a dagger card is seen to pop out of the middle of the deck. As Doomo stated earlier, the revelation is very visual. Ryan Schlutz |

Jeff Pierce wrote me awhile back and asked me if I'd like to see something he was releasing. I loved the work he and Charlie Justice did on the Prohibition DVD and since Jeff made it clear there were no strings attached, so I said OK.
The instructions are very well done. I'm dyslexic, but found them easy to understand and had the mechanics of the effect down fairly quickly. The appearance of the dagger really grabs the audience. I like to come up with my own patter and routine on effects and Sprung and Dagger easily lends itself to allow for that. I'll share something for those that have Sprung and Dagger or are getting it, that I added to the handling. For me, it greatly elevated the impact and reactions I was getting. I have the audience member themselves 'throw' the dagger at the pack. Yes, it's an imaginary dagger, which allows for not only some very funny moments. But, it made the effect stronger ( for me ). I'm basing that on the reactions I got after performing it without them throwing the dagger. Try it yourself and see. I'm very particular about adding anything to what I do when I get paid to perform. Although my basic criteria is simple: it has to be a reaction getter, play big for for everyone in the room. Iit also has to be worthy of replacing another effect that I do ( if it requires me to carry something to do the effect ). SPRUNG AND DAGGER by Ryan Shultz fills my requirements for adding it to my set. GET THIS!

I, too, have been playing with Ryan's effect for a a little while. It's one of those effects that not only looks amazing to your spectators but is also just plain fun to practice. In fact, it's downright addictive!
Very cool trick. If you like surprising revelations (and who doesn't?), pick this up. Oh, and Ryan and Jeff, get those name tags made up!

Hey Cameron-
You sure have that right—It is additive. The revelation fools me in the mirror. The name tags will come in good time. I am happy to read you liked it. Christopher—I really like your idea with the imaginary dagger. I cannot wait to try it! Take Care! Ryan Schlutz |

The other great thing is the patter opportunities. The close up effect I do using the STAB patter gets nice reactions ( Sanders/converter), but you have to be very close to show the small cards on the tip of the sword. Now, this effect can be done for a wide variety of audiences.

JSBLOOM,
I'm particularly fond of the second script, it gets right to the meat of the effect! LOL! Jeff Pierce Magic

Sprung and Dagger rocks.
While I don't usually disagree with Chris, I am not particularly impressed with the poor instructions. But the effect itself is worthy. I'm playing with having a duplicate dagger card and a back-palm... cheers, Doug

Hi Doug, I'm sorry you feel the instructions were poor. We made sure it was sent out to a number of people beforehand to make sure they were understandable. Please feel free to email Ryan or myself with any comments on the instructions.

Hey Jeff,
Writing instructions for magic tricks ain't easy. Let me give you some examples: "With your right hand, stretch the band to the left" - that should be "to the right". "wrap it around the deck from left to right" - that should be "from right to left". "Turn the deck one-hundred and eighty degrees" - besides being underspecified, this is entirely unnecessary. The first half-dozen times I tried to follow the instructions carefully, there was NO motion at all... (because the elastic band was perfectly aligned!) When I tried it without such alignment just *by accident*, I finally realized what the action was, and was able to work out how to get it to happen consistently. Still -- great effect!

Doug, it's true that you can wrap the band from either side but you must do the 180 degree rotation inorder for the card to pop out from the front. If you don't rotate the card comes from the back and you can't get the seperation using your fingers. BTW are you left handed?

The 180 rotation of the deck is not at all necessary. The rubber band is topologically equivalent from either side. I'd be delighted to demonstrate for you. I'm right-handed
