A good show should always contain some sort of message... just don't hit your audience over the head with it.
Now what that message is exactly, is dependent on your persona and the type of magic you do. Even if the message is so subtle that it can only be perceived by you, it is still there as the 'reason' for you to do what you're doing.

It has nothing to do with whether or not to play it safe. It's a matter of professionalism. Philemon is quite right, there should be some sort of message to your show, but if there is anything extreme in it (yes, I know that's subjective, but you know what I mean), a paying client should be informed.
