Can anyone point me towards a coin dealer for 'soft dollars' - the prices from Magic dealers here in UK is somewhat outrageous

All coin dealers should have "soft" dollars...they are more commonly called "slicks" or "junk" silver.

Try ebay - you can find US Morgan Dollars that are in very poor collector shape cheap.

Hold the coin by the edges with vice-grip plyers... put the coin on a palm sander for a few seconds. For stage work: put clear adhesive tape one side...trim to the edge of the coin and you will have a silent coin.
