I am the best magician.
In hip hop music there is the G.O.A.T. concept. It stands for "Greatest Of All Time" and there is the general idea that as a hip hop artist you want to think of yourself as such and work hard to make it as true as you can. Of course in Art is impossible ta have an objective "best," but the idea is if everyone strives for this it elevates the art. Lil Wayne addressed this eloquently in a spoken word piece on his excellent Dedication 2 mixtape. I think this mindset largely accounts for the vibrancy and import of hip hop in popular culture. So obviously I am not the "best" magician. Disregarding the past masters, I can think of many, many contemporary magicians who are unequivocally better then me - but I'm going to go with it anyway, hoping this will push me to get better and better, and I am starting with section of the fora. Let's put our money where our mouths are - I challenge anyone here to prove themselves a better magician than I. This could be settled by an informal contest, or entering contests at magic conventions, or even having video judged, though I think it would be much better suited in person. This especially applies to the gentlemen getting so hot and bothered by my opinions on here - show me why yours are better.
People who work for Theory 11: Do you want a young guy without a stupid gelled haircut or eurotrash jeans for your videos? PM me.

See...then this is where we differ. I don't give two cents about what other magicians think of me, or even being the "best" magician. TBH, it's almost impossible to decide who the "best" magician is, since there are so many categories of magic. David Kaye isn't going to be as good at working a restaurant as Paul Green. And Paul Green can never be the type of magician Lance Burton is. And Lance Burton doesn't do anything remotely close to what David Blaine does.
Some magicians are great technically, yet can't hold an audience for more than 2 minutes. Some magicians do the very basic of sleights, yet can properly entertain an audience for an hour with nothing more than a deck of cards and a TT. Being the best is a very loose term IMO. ![]() P.S. What's the point in proving someone's opinion is better than yours?? An opinion only matters if you let it. Otherwise, they're meaningless. |

How do you judge whos a better magician, we are entertainers, we don't spar for bragging rights, tommy cooper was a magician of average standard, think you could entertain a crowd better than he could? doubt it, better sleight of hand maybe but do layman care about what they do not know?
ive no doubt you are a talented and creative magician, maybe 1 for the future as well, but don't get ahead of yourself, nobody likes arrogance

Some magicians are much better at self promotion than I am.

I hate hip hop. It hasn't advanced as an art form in 20 years.
Emulating hip hop would be an exercise in stagnation. Therefore, in the interest of encouraging a vibrant and progressive magic culture, I concede that Natanel is a better magician than I. |

All I can say is, there's not a single post in this thread that understood the point Natanel was trying to make.
Nat, I think you bring up a good topic. It's too bad nobodies picking up on it. |

Compare it, for example, to New Wave, which by the mid-80s sounded completely different from what it was in the late 70s. Early New Wave was much closer to punk. Later New Wave was commercial, bubble-gum pop. That's a negative evolution. A positive evolution would be rock and roll, which underwent massive change from the 50s through the 60s. Hip hop's "evolution," or lack thereof, is roughly equivalent to the evolution of ska, which pretty much never changes, except on a superficial level. Both were very limited music forms to begin with. That's my personal take, anyway. |

Way back, when I was still in High School, our marching band "teacher"(he was an economics teacher) had no music training. He couldn't play any instruments and he couldn't read music. He listened to a lot of music and was very well "educated" on who composed what and knew very well what things had to sound like. We won our regional competition 5 years in a row and made it to the nationals twice by winning the district competition.
He wasn't really interested in moving to anotherr school for the sake of working with the marching band, but even if he wanted to he would not have been empployed in that capacity because he couldn't read or play anything. My point is that while it may be fun to have a competition, it shows nothing about your knowledge of magic or where you get your opinions from. Competitions measure how well you can plan and perform a 10 minute routine. Real life is a little different. We tend to judge people on results if we want to be associated with winners. |
