I saw Walt's presentation last weekend of the Mighty Mini using a tray, and it looked very good, very convincing. The tray is entirely innocuous and was a natural way of presenting the box to the spectator. I'm thinking it probably also evokes less suspicion than if the box is performed on a table or floor.

Just read quickly thur the threads...can the box be used outside or do you have to use the tray/table? I would like to use it outside at a park on the ground.

As long as you have a smooth flat surface of some type. It will work on smooth concrete I think

It's very small which makes it even more deceiving. Having said that, it should be placed on a table for ease of operation and so it can be seen better. I wouldn't place it on the floor. Best,

@stephen - no: the box will not work outside...
@everyone-else: I *love* the workmanship, and the effect, but I worry: "sticking to the table/tray" isn't nearly as compelling as "causing the man to lose his strength"... I *know* that if one of my brothers was asked to move a L/H chest, after the first attempt they would try to *push* it... and the table would move *with* it. In order to manage such a case, the table requirements must be *much* more stringent than simply the correct surface. The one in the demo is perfect... but such tables are the exception rather than the rule, and it won't fit in my trunk, either...

I recently acquired a Gimpy Pirate Chest. He is a delight to deal with and gave great advice and provided more service than I would ever have expected.
On top of this, the product has a flawless reputation as does Gimpy's craftsmanship. Both exceeded their reputations and my high expectations. I wish I could shop Gimpy for all my magic needs. He is what all vendors want to be. I know this is high praise but it is easily accurate. THANK YOU, GIMPY!!!!! |

Gimpy's boxes work anywhere, outside is no problem, I use mine mostly for outdoor events....but you do need something to make the box heavier....the obvious solution is YOU! I hope Gimpy comes up with a table that has a suitable top, and a base which you can stand on to make the effect foolproof. The performance by Chris Lyle is exceptional - Chris, your style reminds me of Scott Alexander. I don't own the Mini, but I guess it works the same as the Pirate chest, and I have to say, your move is invisble - perfect!

Potty,
The inside working of the pirate box and the mighty mini are exactly the same. There is one big change in the design. The low profile of the mighty mini makes those awsome moves of Chrisopher Lyle possible. I have been asked several times to produce a table for the effect. The problem I see with it is that it would require building several styles of tables to match everybodys show. The solution is to do it on the floor or ground. If I was going to ask a spec. to kneel on the floor or ground I would throw a carpet down to kneel on. The box could be performed on the carpet. As you begin the performance you would explain that the spec.will kneel down and thentoss the carpet down. This seems to to be very natural to me. The effect would then be done on the carpet. The carpet would be a lot better to move show to show than a table. It would also be cheap to make. don't know if I will sell the carpet or just provide instruction on how to make it. One way or the other it will alow the light and heavy chest to be done everywhere , on any floor , grass , beach even the moon. Gimpy

Carpet??? It would have to be a smooth carpet - no? And how big is this carpet? Maybe rug size?
It is a really interesting idea to be able to perform this anywhere. Please expound. |

The carpet would need to be rectangle but not much bigger than a door mat. just big enough for the spec. and the box. It can be made with a regular carpet like from Walmart. the carpet should have fringe on it and a pattern like a Persian style rug.

I would love to hear more about the carpet Gimpy,
Im really confused, how would the chest hold to the carpet and how would it stop the box from being lifted unless the carpet was a hard surface? could you explain a little more |

gimpy2 Special user 960 Posts |
Well it occured to me that it was imposible to move a rug while kneeling or standing on it. If the weight of the lifter could be transfered to the box then the box would also be imposible to lift. The surface need not be hard for the box to work, only smooth and stable. It only needs to be stable between the lifter and the box the rest of the carpet could be normal. In the same respect only the place where the box sets needs to be smooth but not hard, the lifter can be on the carpet. I don't think it would be very hard to make a patterned rug look very normal with more than one type of material cut into it on the same plane .

I would be very interested in this. I would love to see plans for a carpet if you plan on distributing them or if you plan on making them I would love to se what it would look like.
Any plans on what you are going to do with this idea? Blake Adams |

Gimpy, I think I understand what you are referring to. If we as magicians can come up with a reason to use the mat/carpet in our presentation, it would be plausible.
Here are two magicians, Christian Engblom and Kim Wist, who did just that! I don't understand anything they are saying, but their logical presentation for using the hypnotic plate is PERFECT! And the routine seems fun, baffling and entertaining: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEQS7HN3GQ4&feature=related |

That light heavy chest dosent work the same way my boxes do. The plate looks very heavy. The hypno spinning disk is sold with the box seems like I remember the whole set runs $2500. The disc is good misdirection but the weight would be a problem for me. I think the carpet would fit any routine style or theme. The justification of the carpet is natural because you are asking the spec to get down on the floor. Throwing the light weight carpet down would dismiss a lot of possible solutions to the effect. The box cant be attached to the floor because you show the carpet is not. it cant be attached to the carpet because it would come up some when you lift it. The only possible conclusion is the box is somehow heavy or the spectator has become very weak. Blake, don't know yet if I will make these It would depend on the intrest thre is in the idea. As you know it takes a lot to get a product from idea to market. Gimpy
