Has anyone in here researched this book, or included it in a presentation in any way? Just curious. I recently started researching it as a hobby, and it could have limitless potential for our type of work. For those of you not familiar with it... it is a book that no one has been able to read; due to the unique writing. On top of that, no one seems to know how old it is, where it came from, or who wrote it. It is currently housed at the Yale library special collection, and they know it dates back at least to the 1500's.
Furthermore, it appears to be an alchemical text; full of strange plants, anatomical sketches, and is rumored to have been written by an alchemist/monk named Roger Bacon. Anyhow, just curious as to whether or not anyone is currently researching this or using the premis. If you would like to know more about it, check out at http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/voynich.html or http://www.voynich.nu/ Let me know what you think, could be a lot of fun... In magic... Wil.

Will: a pulled-shoulder hiatus, which has rather put paid to my planned golfing-holiday; has given me time to offer some ideas. (Picture the scene... I'm typing one-handed, my body knarled like a twiglet.)
The Truth about the Voynich Manuscript. Human beings are amusing creatures. You find a book full of pictures of unknown and fantastic plants and flowers, every page spattered with stars, and written in a unwordly language, and you wonder what it means! Do I need to join the dots? The Voynich Manuscript is a door, a machine, a technology. A means of accessing the truth about life here on this planet, and about our forgotten selves. In the right circumstances, with the right people, at the right time, it can stop the coarser mind, and burn away the falseness that we call reality. It allows us to see our truer selves. That we are from elsewhere. That we have known a life under a different sky. That we are other than what we seem. These will just be words to some of you, but others, well, you will begin to remember. How can I prove this? Well... 1) When you put aside the crossword cryptography, and actually speak the language aloud, then several people in an assembled group, an audience if you will, will understand the strange words, as clearly as if they were spoken in their native tongue. Others in the group will hear only gibberish. 2) When some individuals look into the manuscript, their minds will seem to stop, and they will briefly be unable to reply to you. 3) As the memories of this alien life return, so the layers of the manuscript will unfurl. Pictures of green bulbous plants will change before the initiate's eyes, and explode into bloom. 4) At a later stage, some of the people in a group will actually be able to speak in the the Voynich tongue, and others will be able to understand them. 5) Specific memories of the true life will be induced by the Manuscript, and confirmed by the supervising master. 6) At the third stage, the sensory veil of this existence will grow whispy and thin. With concentration, the initiate will be able to see the features of, say, the face, moving, and realigning themselves into an old forgotten pattern. 7) At the fifth stage, the patterns of stars on each folio will be seen to change. This will be reflected externally, and the initiate will discover that the familar constellations of this life have subtly altered, and now approximate to a more ancient and alien pattern. 8) Several effects that the unenlightened fondly term 'supernatural', such as certain metal bends, and zero-gravity demonstrations, will occur spontaneously around the Manuscript in the sympathetic group. These will be observed by many, but understood by few. I can write all these things, because few of you will take me seriously. Indeed, because of the nature of this Forum, many of you will examine the eight-fold path outlined above, and read it only as a list of suggested effects. So be it. Yet, this garden of strange things is dizzy with delicate scents, and the fruit hangs heavy on the bough. This is a treasure you must consume yourself. He or she who tastes, knows. Regards, Caleb Strange.

Interesting, I wonder if we will ever crack it.

Two groups assemble, opposing each other in the Theatre of Dreams. One in dark dress, the other in brilliant red. The battle begins, the contest ebbs and flows. The spectators are aghast, as the Trophy slips slowly out of the grasp of their beloved heroes. Twice already in the year have they been on the brink of greatness, only to have the spoils of victory snatched from them. The battle is finally over- another defeat. The Red Devils slink away to lick their wounds, ready for the end of the Fourth and Final Contest of the year. The Oracle foretells of a totally fruitless capaign... again.

This is way off topic Howard, but...
We shall see. Come on the Hammers, and then your boys might have something to play for at Highbury. You could still go down, remember. I also recall that you thought we'd be eight points behind Arsenal at this stage. Were it not for that outrageous offside second goal last week, we'd be six in front. And wasn't it a good game, last night? Pity it wasn't the final. Lee, I refer you to my previous post. The Voynich Manuscript is not so much a puzzle to crack, more of a process through which the true self can be rediscovered. Warm regards, Caleb Strange.

Like Edgar Allen Poe, I start with the conclusion and work backwards; when putting together a complete bizarre magick routine. Let me elborate.
1) I decide what highlights I want to include. "Hey! With a small up close crowd, I should do 'Out of this World.' " 2) I add to that the details of the persona I will use. Standard mentalist/psychic, of course. Due to the spirits summoned up, the arcane knowledge taken from the dreaded book, or the mystical powers of a relic recently acquired. Something more then "mere" mentalism could very easily happen! 3) Adjust for setting and crowd. "Wait, if I cannot set up in advance, that changes everything!" 4) Add history - "Erzebet Bathory's bloody history would apply perfectly here." So, I collect bits and pieces of history, like the Voynich Manuscript, and work them in as I develop the storyline. - Rob |

What happens if this thing is just a clever piece of art work?

Great input all, it's interesting to see how each of you interpret my question and answer a part of it.
Caleb, great thoughts; they took me to a place I would never have gotten on my own. Rob, great show ideas. I would love to replicate this, and use it in a show. Perhaps the real one was stolen years and years ago, and replaced with a forged copy. Now this strange and potentially dangerous manuscript has fallen into the hands of an unsuspecting young magician, when purchased at an auction. What sort of dark turn might this young magician's show take over the course of an hou? Does he own the book, or does the book now own him? Thanks for the inspiration. Lee, it has been suggested that it was simply put out as something to never be understood; but then you have to ask why an author would create two otherwise nonexistent languages? Simply to write these 116 pages about essentialy nothing, for fun? 4-600 years ago, things were not written nearly as often; and when they were it was because it was very important to someone. I may be wrong in this assumption, but from what I have found it seems to be too well orchestrated to be just a collection of paintings. Perhaps we, as Magi of the new world, should begin a movement demanding that Yale turn it over to us; as it rightly belongs to the magic users of the world- and not collecting dust unused in some ivory tower. No way they would release it; but it would bring a lot of public attention to both the book's existence, and the Magi who were fighting for it's liberation. Who's in on the letter writing movement???

Will, that publicity idea is inspired!
Rob, I enjoyed that thorough glimpse into your creative process. Maybe we could start a thread about how we come up with our ideas? For me, that's a lot of the fun in magic. Apart from the odd work like "The Trick Brain" by Fitzkee, it's an area that is poorly explored. Perhaps we should rectify that? Regards, Caleb Strange.

Caleb,
By all means, let's give it another shot. I will admit I've done most of my work with crowds waiting in line, so most of my routines and associated history are fairly short. But that might actaully work as an advantage here. - Rob |
