I think the point is to present for someone who know you well...If you impress them, you are ready. Otherwise, ask for the feedback, then work with the feedback information that you received.
And tape yourself. This is GREAT! |

I show my son. He loves magic, and I just bought him first magic set for his 6th birthday next week. He's a pretty good critic, and he taught me not to preform the floating match under certain lighting conditions.

I use my younger brother (he's 19) He has some interest in magic, but less then me, so he doesn't know -all- of the things that go into it. If I can fool him (of if I can't but that's just because he knows what to watch for) and it still looks good to him, I'd try it out on friends, or even strangers.
I take the subway a lot, and tend to have a deck in hand, and practicing some shuffle, or double lifting, and that can get people to ask me if I do magic, and if so can I show them something. It entertains them, gives me something to do for the ride, and gives me a willing audience, on whom I can try my latest effect. |

Your family is going to be the most honest. If they can tell when you're going to do a sleight that means you're telegraphing the move. My 8 year old is my strongest and most honest critic. Confidence comes from practicing, therefore if a routine is ready for performance you should be able to peform it for any audience.
If you are working on a sleight or a routine and want to test it, try it on a trustworthy family member or another magician. Michaels

My wife is brutally honest with me. She is rarely impressed by anything I do. If I show her a trick, I can expect her to immediately pick out the faults. She "knows all my tricks" and rarely feigns amazement.
It hurts, but ultimately it's more helpful than polite strangers who give you feedback you can't read. That's why I've slowly come to learn that she's my best test audience. AND, in those rare moments when she is truly amazed, I know I've done something special. My wife improves my technique. Strangers build my self-confidence. |
