After reading thru the different threads of the "impromptu"-forum, it is my impression, that impromptu magic is usually associated with close-up settings.
But you can also get into a situation, to have to perform on the spot in a stand-up or even stage setting. What material would you then perform? My personal choices would be: Pierced Polyester (My own version of knife thru coat) Slydini's paperballs over the head I am very curious to hear about your favorite impromptu stage-routines!! |

There is an effect I like to do but I don't know the name of it.
You ask a spectator for his or her watch. Ask him to look at the time and show it to some other person. Give the watch back to the spectator and tell him to hold it using both hands. Ask him if he believes a person can go back in time. Tell him that you as a magician are going to try to make him go back in time. Concentrate and tell him to look at his watch. He will be surprised after seeing that the watch is 10, 15 or even 20 minutes behind the right time. I remember performing this effect once and I acted like I couldn't get him back in time. I appreciated his help and asked him to go back to his seat. The party kept going and after a couple of hours (9:00pm), this fellow ran to me and said, "How did you do that... look at my watch? It is only 8:00pm. You got me back in time." This a nice improv considering almost everyone wears a watch nowadays. Mago Mai

I am also a fan of Paper Balls Over the Head. Depending on the setting:
-Mental Epic -a variety of card tricks (yes they translate to stage very well) -Arm Stunts - Copperfield did it to warm up the audience on "Tornado" -Arm Twisting Illusion (works well in a party scene with a crowd) Donovan |

@Mago
The watch routine, you described, bears similarities to Banachek's Psychokinetic time. (Although I never got away with the prediction part - but the handling for resetting the watch is very good). Another routine I use often in a stand-up setting is a pencil thru bill routine like "East meets west meets south" (David Harkey, Jay Sankey, Eric Anderson). This can be combined with a watch steal very well. Felix |

I forgot about that pencil thru bill routine it is wonderful. I saw it on Harkey on tape. Thanks for the reminder.
Mago Mai My bill switch without the TT is not bad. Mago Mai

Abnormal lift is old already. Kids in schools do that. Too bad.
