I have been watching quite a bit of Darren Brown clips on YouTube lately. Very fascinating. Can anyone shed some light on him and his techniques? Is he the real deal or is he using plants and/or video editing manipulation? Is he crossing NLP and hypnosis? Would appreciate any and all feedback.
Thanks and cheers! |

Hi, may I suggest that you do a search for Derren Brown on both this forum and the mentalism forum. He has been discussed in various Q&A sessions in the past few years.
Darren is a very well educated man in the art of mentalism, magic, hypnosis and NLP but he also has a incredible TV editing crew and a brilliant script writer making his shows so successful. Why not buy his book at Amazon.co.uk in which he discussed many of his principals. I hope this info helps. There is really no easy answer to your question

Also, watch The System on YouTube. It gives much insight to the brilliant mind of DB.

Ahh... Derren Brown.
Some love him. Some hate him. I think he's great, bringing mentalism and thinking back to the forefront of TV Magic. I've never seen him use plants, just people and horses. Get "Tricks of The Mind", good book imho...

A friend of mine, who is a training magician, picked up NLP based ways to induce a specific card in the spectator's mind based on a couple of Derren Brown's YouTube videos.
The interesting thing is that my friend has no clue about NLP or Hypnosis, besides what he has seen on YouTube. He is more into close up magic and manipulation. Giovanni. |

I have done metal bending for people that as soon as I finished and the were freaking out they went straight to youtube and watched the how to videos (most by randi). Long story short, they still had no idea how I did it because my handling is polished. I feel the same about my floating table, it is exposed on youtube but after seeing me do it laymen would say "no way he did it like that".
Tirir, If your friend is doing psychological forces he must have very good leading and communication skills. I believe that most of the time the spectator knows that you made them choose that card but, as Derren states in Pure Effect, that is more powerful sometimes than the traditional mind reading. You CAN learn much on YOUTUBE. Jon |

There are very good things on youtube, but what I don't like about it, is that there are also a lot of very bad magicians that present their effects in such a bad way that, even if they are not showing the how to part, they reveal everything and therefore good magic looks very bad. I think that is the bad part about youtube. A good magician I know calls it: "prostitution of magic".

It is actually STRONGER when they see something on youtube and then say but that CAN'T be how you did it. Rise above my brother. . . EVOLVE and you will be noticed! JD |

JD I totally agree with you. I try to do the same, actually what you are talking about is what artists call "artistic appropriation", like Marcel Duchamp for example.
On the other hand I was thinking about cases like my friend N. who is a very good young magician, but last year he posted something on YouTube that was pretty good, but as a result of that, dozens of his university class mates watched the video over and over again until the figured it out. The problem came when all those kids started doing it to everybody in such a bad way that my friend N. was not able to perform that particular effect again. Giovanni. |

Giovanni,
I too have erased my youtube videos. I can not control who sees them and I now send a different video to each market that I work in. A comedy club video is much different than a corporate demo. I CAN control that but the things I can not control (other peoples videos) I will not complain about and find a way to work around it. JD |
