This image is the closest I could find to the kind of lighting effect I'm aiming for.

It's needed for a stage act. The goal is to make it look like the entire stage is underwater. The "Underwater" lighting will be in motion like and look as real as possible. Yes, I know they'll know it isn't real but for this act to work I'd need it to look good in order to create the atmosphere I'm aiming for.

I'd also like to be able to use it on a smaller stage such as a platform stage. For the platform set up the room will be darkened and the water effect will be seen in the area lit by a spot light.

Obviously it'll have to be some kind of projection. Do any of you have any suggestions as to how I might pull this effect off?

They make effect lights just for this purpose. Here's one made by Martin: http://www.martin.com/product/product.asp?product=maniadc1

I've seen them in use, but never owned one. So I can't really give you any advice other than to let you know they exist.

Here's a low-tech, low-budget version:

Chauvet also makes a version called "Abyss", I believe...

Ron, here in my town at our local museum they have a very cool entrance "underwater" into an exhibit. I always thought it would look cool on stage. They have the gobos hitting the floor with the effect you are looking for, but above your heads, there are white circular/oval types of shapes. They also project light onto that, and it really has the underwater feel to it because of the lights above our heads.

Also, if you had haze in the air with some lights coming down at an angle - that might look cool too.

I use a a light fixture called the Abyss from Chauvet that makes a water effect. If you used a magnifying glass on the lense, you could cover the stage with this effect. http://www.chauvetlighting.com/sx-abyss.html.

take a look at this. I own 6 of these and have had sucess with using them as water or as flame. You can stop the rotating color wheel on a color or on split color (i suggest between blue and green)
