I have recently thought up the idea of trying an underwater straight jacket escape. I wanted to ask if you say very possible and would you recommend a gaft jacket or the real deal. My worries are that the material will stick to my skin but I believe with enough practice it can be done, but before I dive in thought I would ask.

Check out http://www.cannonsgreatescapes.com/catalog.html
SLICK-GIMMICKED STRAIT JACKET Created by Mark and Sheila Cannon © 2006 This jacket was specifically designed to allow a performer to present a strait jacket escape in a tight/confined area, such as a box, etc. Not only gimmicked to allow jacket to be quickly escaped from, but also made of special material to resist moisture, sweat, etc. Therefore, it is much more slippery than actual canvas jackets. Attractively manufactured of black and white materials. While not designed for close examination, it does fit the bill when escape must be performed in a tight place and quickly. Available in SM, MED, LG & XL |

Do you know if the regular jackets would just adhere to my skin in an under water situation making it nearly impossible or is it just more difficult?

Email Mark C. and ask him. He is the man with answers when it comes to this type of escapes!

Bear in mind also - a standard jacket of canvas material will absord water...making the entire jacket very heavy under water.
Cannon's "slick jacket" was made originally for water-escapes (Criss Angel used it while being dragged behind a speedboat). But for safety reasons, it's not advertised for such purposes, and if you do use it for an underwater escape - YOU would assume all responsibility, risk & liability - not the seller. |

Yes a regulation straitjacket will stick to your skin like spandex when wet! Definately use the Cannons' Jacket and practice it a lot!

In a nut shell it’s just who I am ... if I don’t absolutely have to use the gaft jacket I don’t want to but as everyone seems very keen on using the gaft I guess this will be my choice unless someone comes foreward stating it is some what possible.

Always use gimmick restraints when dealing with water or real danger!

I see no reason why the Cannons can't provide you with an UNgimmicked "Slick Jacket" - as a special request item.
Ask them. |

I can’t quite believe "we" – (by we I mean YOU) are giving potentially life threatening advice to someone who we do not even know. No introduction - no idea how long he has been into magic or even ever done an escape etc.
If someone jumped in an said “how do you get out of cuffs” we would tell em to go jump as it were (well most would ) yet you guys are just saying “right this way” hey ill help you with it. It is a very dangerous escape and NOT to be advised (I am sure I will get jumped on here for this but here goes anyway!) GTBROTHERs DON’T DO IT! And if you do decide you really want to do it – go find a DIRECT mentor someone who can work with you on it. AND Makes it someone who has ACTUALLY DONE IT BEFORE – not just someone who will say “go get that jacket from there it’ll be fine……” Not an attack on anyone – sure as he11 not meant to be but I really think that this is such a potentially dangerous escape it is not the thing to be posting on here. We don’t get into a discussion about hanging from burning ropes. If I was going to die from either – I want to go from the burring rope 200 foot up it would be a quicker way out than drowning from not getting out of a SJ underwater. PLEASE DON’T TRY IT and don’t contemplate it until you have a mentor to work with directly. We would love for you to come back to us and talk to us another time! "Rant" over - now go kill yourself or get serious about performing escapes. |

Dave, our resident scientist agrees with you.
Anyone should be able to quickly escape a regulation jacket, basically in their sleep before going underwater. Practicing while standing up in the shallow end of the pool with a friend standing by is good too. One of the problems we face is making our simple and rigged escapes look really dangerous to an audience. There are a number of ways of doing this without real danger involved. Example. I learned to pick handcuffs open. I did this more times than I can count, before I ever put the things on. Then I put them on in front, and got out many times before going behind my back. At first I made sure I had back up when trying behind my back. Only after all this did I start taking my bets. Learn to crawl, learn to walk, learn to run.... then try to fly.
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right! |

...... then learn to do a SJ whilst flying ...... (or falling in your case )
But I still wouldnot advocate doing a SJ escape in water - without a teacher who has done it many times - if I were going to do an upside down SJ escape - I would get advice from 2 people - one to be hands on when I tried it (Ken) and one for advice from over the pond (Margarette - funny choice? May be but she has more knowlege than many ---- sorry to bring it up Margerette) Please don't try it (and theat st eh last I will say on it) |

Bill Shirk (google for him) has experience with trying to get out a wet straitjacket. It did not end pleasantly, though he did get out... finally.

Hey guys sorry for the delayed response... I take no offence to any of the comments. I definitely do understand the risk that is involved. I have been diving for about 4 years now and I dreamed up the idea ... As I'm not experienced in underwater sj escapes at all obviously but I am familiar with the sj escape but jumping into water changes this a great deal as to all maneuver to escape the sj above water change when you jump in ... to better let you guys understand I do plan on attempting this... I'm still not sure if I will use a gaft or not I still need to do research... I wanted to do the effect in a lake with bringing cold waters into the equation ... I so far am planning on cuffing my legs and attaching weights to the cuffs to take me down... As far as practicing I am using 2 people one with scuba gear and underwater during each practice run and one above water ... I am practicing in an out door pool with a 1/8 wet suit on to keep my body temperature under control... There is a lot more information but I feel it’s not necessary to go into ... I am 100% safe with a diver only inches away with oxygen I don’t feel threatened obviously there are risk but with time I can narrow them out... I will gladly accept advice and criticism but, I take responsibility for my actions and I will not get injured... This is not something I'm going to just do in a weekend it will take months to prepare and if I'm not ready then years ... thanks for your responses

I am 100% safe... I don’t feel threatened obviously there are risk but with time I can narrow them out GT this is what gets people killed. There have been many posts here over the years that once you lose all unease of an escape it is time to stop doing it. No fear means too much comfort... that comfort leads to lack thinking on your feet because you are not thinking of what may come. A number of people have thought they have had all the bases covered and still died or been injured. Myself included.

The idea I'm portraying to you is 100% safe meaning not that everything will go as planned but when/if something goes wrong I will not be found floating in a pool dead. By safe I mean I have made safety precautions that I believe are very safe... I plan on practicing until I am comfortable with the sj underwater and your comment on comfort leads to lack of thinking this is not my personality... My view on life is not that of a cocky dare devil... I am taking my time making a plan and steps and sticking to the steps and I will be fine.
Thanks, tyler |

Wait, use a specially made jacket for the escape? I have not seen a picture of it, but it just sounds odd.
If you are underwater escaping, why would it stick? I can see if you leave the water with it on, but underwater? Underwater, your hair flows freely. When you leave the water, it is flat against you, stuck. I would assume a sj would do the same underwater, possibly even making it easier to escape.
