For the past 5 or 6 years I've given a free trick away to the Café for the holidays. While I was trying to think of what to give away this year I realized that although I'm kind of known as a thread worker I haven't given any Invisible thread tricks away for this Christmas gift. So I decided to give one this year.
EFFECT You throw an airplane and it fly's. No magic here right? But wait, It'll turn and fly in another direction. Then another direction seemingly at your command. Then it finally fly's back to you. METHOD To do this you'll need a long length of Invisible Elastic thread. This can be done inside or outside (If the conditions are right for thread work of course). I'll first tell you how to do it inside. A length of Invisible Elastic thread runs from the ceiling to the paper airplane. Rig the thread to the plan at it's center so that it'll float horizontally. The plane must be balanced for this to work. In other words if the plane is hanging from the thread and you let go of it it'll be level. It's also a good idea to tape the place closed (so the middle won't open). Make it so it's hanging at about stomach level. Now when you throw the plane it'll fly in the direction you throw it like normal. When the thread reaches it's peak the plane will turn and fly in another direction. Because the thread is elastic it won't come to a jerking stop. Instead it'll slow down, turn the fly in another direction. It really does look magical. Depending on how long the thread is and how hard you through it. It can change directions 3 or 4 times. But you should catch it while it's moving. Otherwise it'll look like it's hanging form something. Give it a try. It really does look like magic. Now, for outside the set up is the same but you use a longer length of thread. You obviously have to have something above you to attach the thread to so the plane can hang from it. I've used tree branches and power lines. My favorite is power lines because then you can through the plane across the street and it'll fly back to you. If you go to the Abbott's get together next year I'll be doing this there at the main intersection. I'll use the power line and hide the plane behind a street sign. I'll tell you how I attach it to a tree branch. I put something on the end of the thread such as a stick and toss it over a branch. So you now have a length of invisible elastic running from the spool on the ground, open over a branch then back down to the stick. Remove the stick and tie the "Stick end" of the thread into a loop around the "Spool end". This creates a sort of slip knot. Pull the spool end so that the knot moves up to the branch. You now have a single length of thread running down from the branch. The performance is the same as I described above but outside it's a lot more impressive because the plane will fly further. Of course you are limited to the right lighting (evening is usually fine) and it can't be too windy. Give it a try sometimes. I'll try to make a video of this to show you all soon. Won't be able to do the outside video for a while because we got a lot of snow here in Michigan right now. But I'll make a video as soon as I can. Happy Holidays! Ron Jaxon |

Yea, it is fun to play with. I came up with this when I was goofing around in my back yard. I use a paper airplane with Sea Bogunia's PTS so I thought I'd try it with the elastic.
You can also start a performance by first making it float in one spot. The elastic thread will make it look kind of like it's hovering. In fact it also looks neat if it's hovering in one spot. Push it down toward the ground then let go. It'll bounce a bit then go back to where it started. Ron Jaxon |

Thanks for the trick Ron. By the way, in the title Annual should have two "n"s.

Make a small paper plane and use Fearson's floating cigarette hook up. What I really like is how the plane always points in the right direction. When it changes direction it'll turn. Just make sure it's level and it'll turn automatically like that. Ron Jaxon |
